Guadelupe Sunrise

Not underwater; but an HDR pano of Isla de Guadelupe at sunrise before the action started. It's quite cool how the red sunrise is accentuated in the cliffs.

Five minutes later and the fiery red of the cliffs is gone.

Excellent image. HDR Panorama from the back of a boat, most impressive. Can you provide your technique for this? Were the images shot as verticals?

When I saw this happening I did not have time to go find a tripod and set it up. So this is handheld trying to stay as level as I could. This is taken with the D700, 24-70 lens at 24mm. I shot 3 exposures bracketed +1 and -1, and swung through more then 180 degrees taking 4x3 shots. I did not use the right hand series though because they would not synch in HDR. ( I may try work on it some more yet)

The 3 exposures were merged in Photomatrix for each frame, then the 3 HDR frames stitched with Double Take.

So you used Photomatrix first and then stitched with Double Take. I would have thought you would have stitched first then used Photomatrix. I don't do very much HDR or Panos but an image like this makes me want to go out an play.

 

BTW, how do you like the 17-35 as compared to the 24-70 on your D700?

I think it would be more difficult to do it that way around, but maybe not.

I like them both, though the 24-70 is probably the lens I keep on the camera most of the time now on the FX camera. Before I kept the 17-35 on the D200 - though now I pretty much use the D700 for topside stuff, no housing yet. I'm waiting to see how things play out with housings over the next few months.

Having shot the D3 underwater on this trip with Jeff, I'm less convinced.

Very cool shot ... and especially cool given that it was handheld on a boat! Sunsets with the FF sensor are looking GOOD.

 

I'm glad to see you made the stiching work so well using a 24mm perspective as I was always told to use focal lengths of 35mm or greater for panos ... I'm gonna have to try some on the wider side now that I have the 17-35mm.

 

I'm off to Colorado this weekend and hope to get some cool early morning panorama opportunities in the Poudre River Cache.

 

I'll also have to try Double Take ... if it runs on Windows ... I tried to use Hugin recently and it fried my Vista machine so badly that I had to restore it from a backup image.

 

I'm looking for software that can stitch multiple images in any orientation like Hugin can. CS3 is ok for straight horizon shots, but I want to try something a bit more "patchwork" and multi-directional.

That is an extraordinarily confusing photo, Jeff...the sun illuminating the cliffs from the wrong side, and all.

 

I think the light balance is appropriate for HDR, as well.
