Canon 50D in a Sea and Sea MDX-40D Housing

Recommended Posts

Today my Sea & Sea rep and I spent some time testing the new Canon 50D camera to test the fit and functionality in the current MDX-40D Housing.

We are happy to report that the 50D camera fits perfectly in the 40D housing with 100% functionality of all controls.

As of right night, I have not tested the 50D in any other housing, but will be doing so in the very near future. Sea and Sea now officially states that the 50D works in their 40D housing. That means no 4-6 month wait for a new housing!!

Please tell about the Live View on the 50D... Is it useable?

I wanna 50D. But will I get TTL with the Sea & Sea Canon converter wired to a pair of Z-240's?

Tim, you could try to the Heinrichs Weikamp converter. You'd just have to make sure you got a housing with S6 bulkheads for it to work with a Canon.

Thanks for your suggestion Aussie. I have taken a remote look at the Weikamp converter and have decided it may be inelegant and potentially problematic. Cameras Underwater have stopped distributing in the UK for these (and other) reasons.

Not infrequently, I find myself on 'deep air' and an externally controlled exposure compensation system, like on the S&S converter, will be very helpful when I'm narked out of my box...

Know the feeling. Dived the Coolidge a few months ago, hovering at 60-70m on air trying to take photos was an experience I won't soon forget (happy to say the G7 Ike housing performed well though!)!

Let me know how you go with a S&S converter, maybe I'll look into it in the future for my new rig.

I have not played with the Live View on the 50D yet. However, in just a few hours my Sea & Sea rep Andy Sallmon and I will be out diving with the 50d in the MDX housing, so I will report back to you.

I heard S&S had 'based' their converter on the Weikamp unit. Whether the S&S offering was produced in cooperation with Weikamp or plagerised is not a concern. I tend towards the S&S as it has an external exposure compensation system.

Well we had a great day playing with the 50D at Catalina today. I am writing up a report on the camera/housing combo this weekend and will have some pics to go along with it. We came back tonight to look at the photos and ran into one small problem that Andy and I are still investigating. As of right now, either Photoshop nor Lightroom will open the RAW files from the 50D. We receive an error message stating color mode type not supported...so Andy is double checking the files tonight to make sure there was not a setting error, and we are looking to see if there are any reports of a new plug in coming out for Photoshop.

Will keep you posted.

Is it possible that Adobe will hold the pluggin for 50D raw files for CS4, leaving out CS3? I seem to remember they did this with the 40D and CS2?

Ryan.

You can use the Canon DPP software that comes with the camera to open the 50D RAW files. I have also read that the new Abode Camera Raw 4.6 will also work. DP-Review has a discussion forum pertaining to the 50D, lot's of good info posted there.

Thanks Ill check out DP Review. Im doing my research to see if anyone else has figured out the solution. Sure would suck if you had to upgrade to CS4. We were also wondering if Lightroom 2.0 will solve it, as Andy & I both have 1.4 We are going to call Adobe on Monday.

As I understand it, you need LR 2.1 RC and Camera Raw 4.6 RC. I believe that both are now available for download. We do have to purchase the upgrade from LR 1.4 to LR 2.1. I pick up my 50D next Thursday so I too am interested in the raw post processing for the 50D.

The LR forum on Adobe's website is where I got this latest info.

Does that include using Live View? As far as I can figure it out you will need access to the "print" button which is not offered by any 40D housings.

I bought CS3 a few weeks ago. In fact, a day before the release of CS4 was posted here... So I phoned Adobe and asked for an upgrade. A gratis CS4 is in the post! :fool:

Big 'but' though. My CS3 will not load as it seems unable to recongnise that I am running a Core 2 Duo processor... Hopefully CS4 will do better. Anyone else have this problem with CS3?
