pairing up strobes

Recommended Posts

I have a ds125 & am looking to buy either another ds125 or ds160 just want to hear opinions on whether to get another ds125 or get a ds160.

My understanding is that the 125 and 160 both use the same physical flash tube so there should not be any colour issues with mixing them.

The revised electronics in the 160 hit the tube a bit harder to get more light output.

The 160 is a bit bigger and heavier so if you travel at all that may be an issue.

The same tube doesn't mean the same color result. Altering the drive voltage will change the color.

The revised electronics in the 160 hit the tube a bit harder to get more light output.

Hitting the tube "harder" will also change the color.

I'm sure mixing a 160 and 125 will be fine. Unless you want mismatched output, you won't be able to take advantage of the 160's extra output. If it were me, I'd get the 160 and look to upgrade the 125. Otherwise, I'd try to find someone else doing the same and get a second 125 for a good deal. I would want my strobes to be the same.

I have Dual DS-125's. I do not feel that I have ever missed a picture for lack of power. The additional power would yield very little distance and you color would be falling off. But then I tend to shoot a lot of macro. Still My carry on with the Subal and all I am to terrified to check weighs 40 pounds. I mostly fly NW because of this. Another Pound and I would be over even what they allow.
