D700 Conversion

Sam,

You are clearly a genius. Even though Nexus probably did not design their housings with conversions in mind; their design clearly facilitates conversions better than companies like Subal, SeaCam, Aquatica et al. The argument that the precision required of high end housings negates upgrade planning is nicely refuted by your efforts Sam. It would be nice as we head into the recession years if the other guys would think about it.

Did you make the back plate by your self or did you contact nexus for a new one. I understand with the correct set of tools this would be possible. Nevertheless still takes a lot of effort to measure out the correct tollerances for the push button penetrations.....

 

Can you tell me a bit more about your 8" Dome you use?

Thanks. I find from Anthis/Nexus web site that they are now offering new d200 housing back cover for d300 at around U$700.-

but, I am not sure it is going to take d700 into it. Anyway, it was not that difficult project for me.

Re back window, I (Well...Machinist I am using designed it in CAD & produced it from his CNC) made it & it was not that difficult.

It was a lot easy to put d300 as it even has a room to pop up internal flash for fiber-optic connection but, d700 conversion has

much less tollerance (very tight) & am not sure anybody will do this conversion commercially.

 

Re Zen dome port, I bought it from Reef photo & was told they are getting this glass dome from Japan & it is one of best quality

optic available in market. Coated in & out of dome. They have model for S&S,Subal & Nexus(M5 port) and I think I can get/change

different adapter for different model if I need to by looking at it. I will know more when I use it next week.

Are the zen 8" domes cheaper than the nexus domes?

 

your d700 kits include: buttons? base plate? and back window?

 

is that the inon viewfinder fitted in your images? I wouldn't use an accessory viewfinder, nervous about how vunerable they look. So would I need to pull off the eyepiece from the d200 back window to put it on your d700 window?

regarding the dome question.

- Largest Anthis nexus optical glass dome is currently only 160mm in diameter.

- there is as bel a 170mm acrylic dome with reasonable deeps rating, and a 230mm acrylic dome with no deeps rating mainly designed for surface half-half images

 

currently nexus has various smaller optical glass domes especially designed for certain Nikon lenses 10.5mm / 15mm / Tokina 10-17mm / .... but not real comprising do a "optical super dome" (one dome for all). Especially Canon users do have not a big variety apart from the Tokina 10-17mm. I still hope....!

I have a nexus 230mm acryllic dome, bought it over 12 years ago, and it has been to over 40 metres many, many times. it doesn't accomodate a shade though and I am not sure the later model would either.

I have had two of them both started leaking. One allmost as soon as it hit the water, the other after a years time.
