MIKE POWELL 1 Posted December 25, 2008 I own the Tokina 12-24 and was wondering if it is worth buying a zoom gear and extension ring for an up and coming trip to Cayman or is the Canon 10-22 a better choice? How do the two lenses compare? I have a NX Fisheye dome port and SX Extension ring for my Tokina 10-17....I think all I need is a 40mm Ext ring and a Nikon 18-70 zoom gear, which from reading a few posts should work with the lens and my S&S MDX 40D housing. Thanks for your thoughts! Mike
reefkeep2 0 Posted January 4, 2009 Why do you want either, is the Tokina not working out? Just wondering as I'm looking at the 10-22 and the lens you have today..... Thanks RK
aussie 0 Posted January 4, 2009 A few months ago I was looking for a decent wide lens, originally for topside stuff, but with the plan to take it underwater. In the end , I got the Tokina 11-16mm, and am very happy with it (for both uses). The 12-24 doesn't look too different, so I can't see why you wouldn't use this for UW, rather than spending the extra money on the Canon (which IMHO is overpriced). Check out the lens reviews on Photozone if you want to see how they all compare though. Ryan.
MIKE POWELL 1 Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks for the replies RK & Ryan, I was looking for a rectilinear WA lens to compliment my 10-17 fisheye. I had bought the Tokina 12-24 for topside use, but had to get a custom zoom gear made to work in my S&S housing...just wanted to make sure it was worth spending the $$$...plus Ryan at REEF suggested a 2+ diopter...anyway I bit the bullet and went with the 12-24. Have only heard great things about the Tokina 10-17, but to get good pics of tarpon and the like in Cayman a rectilinear lens was suggested. There's only so much stuff a person can buy....in the end it's how you use it I reckon' ! Thanks again! Mike
MikeO 5 Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks for the replies RK & Ryan, I had bought the Tokina 12-24 for topside use, but had to get a custom zoom gear made to work in my S&S housing...just wanted to make sure it was worth spending the $$$...plus Ryan at REEF suggested a 2+ diopter...anyway I bit the bullet and went with the 12-24. I used the 12-24 behind a Sea and Sea fisheye dome for several years and was happy with it. Rather than go the the trouble of getting a custom gear made, I found a stock gear that was too big (the one for the Canon 100mm) and lined it with padded carpet tape until it fit the lens. Worked just fine. Mike
