funkcanna 0 Posted January 18, 2009 Is this a damselfish? If so which species? Taken in the Arabian Gulf.
deepsea 0 Posted January 18, 2009 Hi Looks like a Juvenile Pomacentrus vaiuli common name from my book Princess Damsel. Nice photo Karen
JimG 26 Posted January 19, 2009 Interesting one and difficult due to the variability of colour within species and by area. According to my books and Fishbase, the Princess Damsel isn't known from the Arabian Gulf - not to say Karen is wrong however, it could well have just never been noticed there. The only one I can come up with is the Colombo Damsel, Pomacentrus proteus, but that too is not shown as coming from the Gulf, the nearest place being Sri Lanka. Hope somebody else has some ideas. funkcanna 0 Posted January 19, 2009 Could it be Pomacentrus arabicus? Kinda seems likely due to location.
JimG 26 Posted January 20, 2009 Never come across P. arabicus and there are very few pics on Google. The colours shown on Fishbase don't tie up with your image at all. Wait and see if anybody else has suggestions I guess.
