marksm 0 Posted January 22, 2009 Does anyone know if the new PHU-60K HDD recorder will fit in the Gates EX1 housing?

shawnh 0 Posted February 7, 2009 You also need to consider heat issues. The camera itself generates some heat. The additional drive creates more. It will also affect balance and buoyancy. No free lunch!
marksm 0 Posted February 9, 2009 (edited) Well at over a grand Shawn; Def not a free lunch! However, I have one being sent to me when I return from Brazil to see if it fits. Considering, if I am not careful, I can fog up the port: I would say the housing is staying plenty cool right now. That said, I am considering a few things. I have been very happy with the SD solution from Australia. It has worked like a charm and has given me 2 hours of recording for under 200 bucks. (two card adapters delivered at 95 bucks and two Sandisk sd extreme II 16gb cards at 50 bucks each. Now every hour of recording only costs me 50 bucks. I can even hand the SD card to a client. No errors or dropped frames. The free lunch issue? No overcrank past 48fps. http://e-films.com.au/ The hard drive unit will not record any overcrank at all. But I dont mind going to an sxs card for those times I need it. Now I would love to leave one of my SxS cards in one slot in case I want to overcrank to 60fps but my Gates housing doesnt have a slot switch control. Mark Can Gates customize a lever / button to hit the slot switch button... That would be seriously helpful...? Dive safe DeanB
Mike L 0 Posted February 10, 2009 I spoke with Gates and they said the drive will not fit in the housing. Apparently they have received a couple of inquiries about other drives (not Sony) that are smaller. One customer is sending in one of the drives to see if it will fit in the housing. Pamela at Gates did not have the name of the drive that was being sent it, and they have not received it yet. If I get any other news, Ill send an update. marksm 0 Posted February 10, 2009 (edited) Can Gates customize a lever / button to hit the slot switch button... That would be seriously helpful...? Yes. Around 800-900 usd. I spoke to John about this modification and they have to spend the engineering time, design time, machine time, anodizing, and testing to do it for a one-off. I understand that. The money I would save in sxs cards or a hard drive would pay for that. We discussed the pros of putting it on the next run of housings. That will be good for those users. Maybe it will cost a little less then for us early folks to have the mod done. It appears that it is Sonys adaptation of the USB 2 standard that is preventing the overcrank from being recorded past 48fps with the adapter cards. Even with a Sandisk Extreme III at 30mps, It wont do it.. so those cards at twice the price aren't worth the coin. As far as the hard drive is concerned. It might be me who Gates is waiting on to send them a drive to check out. We discussed this before I left for Brazil. My rough measurements and looking at the specs suggests it will fit under the handle and then you need to attach the battery. Will be tight. But as soon as I return from Brazil, I will get the drive in and test it out. If it fits, then I'll send it to Gates to see if they want to do a bracket for it. Mike L 0 Posted February 16, 2009 Ok I was down at Gates on Thursday and spoke to John & Pamela about the hard drive more. Yes Mark, it is you they were waiting on What drive was it that you wanted to send down for them to try out? John couldn't remember the name it. They did say if anyone has any drives they would like to see work, they would be happy to take a look and try it out if you are willing to send the drive for them to test fit.
