10D Back and Front focus

What is backfocusing and why does the camera do it?

 

Can we each run Miskin's test in daylight and check for it? If our cameras have a bad problem, should we send them in to get the AF sensors adjusted?

90% of the posts about the 10D on Dpreview are users whining about backfocus. But it's hard to tell, because they take hand-held shots in low light and then complain about them being out of focus...

 

But yes. Some of the 10Ds out there are known to backfocus...

 

Mine seems fine. But I haven't done any tests with it, and someone is borrowing it right now.

I finally took the plunge and ordered my 10d two days ago. Should arrive in the mail in a couple of days. I really hope I don't have the front/back focus problems that I have read so much about. Based on a lot of what I have read I think it is a far more popular forum topic than an actual problem. At any rate, everyone keep your fingers crossed for me.

 

I also ordered the 50mm f2.5 Macro. Still deciding on other lenses but leaning towards the 17-40 f4 L and 70-200 f4 L. Should round things out nicely I think.

 

Now just waiting on a housing...my sights are on the Jonah right now.

 

Any opinions on the above choices would be helpful should anyone have the time.

 

Eric...any words of wisdom or things worth passing on about the 10d?

 

Can't wait to put the whole thing together and start taking pictures...as much as I enjoy looking at all of yours...really want to post some of my own

Much is being bounced around the internet about this issue.

 

I think the problem is real. So what?

 

My N90s got out of whack and back focused. I took it to the local repair and they whacked back into focus. It took a day.

Remember folks, you normally only hear from the people who are NOT happy. Most everyone I talk with is very happy.

 

I read about the ruler test, the cereal box test etc etc etc and wonder, when someone is testing focus that closely, how much might posibbly be "tester error" as opposed to "testee error" ;-)

I read the threads but there was insufficient information provided to really understand what was going on (at least for me!). I assume he took three pictures using three different light sources and let the same autofocus settings work. he says in his post "(in green or white light - which is a mix of 3 wavelengths R-G-B on LCD)". That's nonsense of course. I hope his understanding is better than that.

 

I'm curious to know how many AF areas there are in the 10D and how they were being used for the test. It seems to me that a focusing problem that's color-specific could involve the camera or the lens (or both).

 

I looked at the other thread on the topic but that test looked different. I think the assumption here is that the camera tries to focus the same but gets it wrong. How do we know from the tests that the camera didn't simply decide to focus differently?

I think I read a claim that the test was easily reproduceable.

Sounds like a good lens lineup! You'll be set. Except that you may want to check out the Sigma 15mm full-frame fish-eye as well.

 

Ikelite has something in the works for the 10D as well, but I'm not sure when it will be available. If you do get a hold of the Jonah, let us know how it works out!

I felt like I understood the first test better than the second one. I was simply thinking that the camera may be working properly and it was the tester's understanding that was in error.

The Ikelite housing for the Canon 10D will be available sometime around November, as will the Jonah. The Subal housing should be shipping in a matter of weeks (I hope!). Sea&Sea is also putting one out, but I dont know when.

With all the time and energy that some of the people complaining about backfocusing put into testing whether it focuses or not I can't see how they have any time to take any REAL photos at all.

Mine has the issue with my 100-400 L lens and with all of my Simga lenses. (even the fisheye) The 100mm Macro & the 50mm Macro is dead on perfect.

Nice chain moray at night. You're using autofocus for all these?

 

Is the effect you see color specific? Your experience certainly implicates the lens although it's problably the combo that matters.

Every shot on that page is in autofocus. I tested the back focus issue for a couple of weeks, I also did the tests with the D60. The D60 front focused with the same lenses.

I used Dual Ike 125s manual mode.

Yes, I tested it a few days after the 10D was released it fit perfectly in my housing. I have an older version of the UK Gernany D30 housing.

Interesting. It appears that a 30,000 member-strong SLR group in Korea has boycotted the 10D for its focus and service problems.
