High definition replacement for the trv900.

Recommended Posts

I have been shooting with the trv900 in a Gates housing for 10 years now and recently decided to move on to high definition. I bought an SR-12 but before getting a housing for it took it for a test dive in my (jerry rigged) trv900 housing. Checked the results (on an SD TV) and I could not believe how inferior they were compared to my "old" TRV. Low light capability, color rendering, sharpness, just about everything was better with the trv900. So I guess it's back to the drawing board, probably looking for a High Def 3 chips camera. Price, to an extent, is an issue but more important to me is weight and size. I film dives in a resort setting on a daily basis ( I'm based in the Philippines) and a lot of topside filming (briefing, speed boat rides to the dive sites, etc...) has, for logistical reasons, to be done with the camera in the housing, taking its toll on my back and neck. My current set up with lights is about 9 kgs/20 lbs out of the water. Does anyone have any advice regarding a set up, probably would have to be 3 chips, that would be a hi def match for the trv in terms of quality/size/weight...?

Maybe one of the new cams that has just come out will fit your needs. The older Sony FX1 and FX7 fit your quality description, but definitely not size/weight.

I've seen footage from the new Sony XR520 in a L&M housing, might want to take a look, I believe he had a SR12 before. Canon S100/S10 also looks promising.

Indeed I have found this to be a huge problem too!!! I for many years have used a TRV 900 for work. For size quality and shooting through the housing the 900 was the best camera for the job. The company i work for and myself have searched for an HD option and gone done quite a few unsuccessful paths. There really is nothing in comparrison. I now use a Z1 and gates housing. But there is no shooting through the housing anymore, with fathom dome port, monitor and lights, its just too heavy. I am very happy with the quality of the camera and housing, but really the only option i can think to get around this is to get a 2nd camera like an HC9 and have it in a sealed aqua pac for topside stuff. That is of course if you have time in post production. As you often you dont in shooting resort videos.

Good luck plase post what you opt to do or if you do find a comparible option.

Thanks for your input. Indeed, in the setting I work, there's little time for post production as the films are in-camera edited and shown a few minutes after the dives. Any post production necessary is done after the clients place their orders so the two cameras option is not viable. Guess for the time being I'll stick with the 900 till I find the right solution. Will keep you posted if I find anything.

ronscuba: Thanks for the info, will look into that. By the way, I'll never touch a light and motion housing again as I've found from experience that although their products are not bad their customer service totally sucks!

Gates is making housings for the Sony XR520 and Canon S10/100.

BTW, I used to shoot a TRV900 in a Gates housing. Great system. When I decided to go HD, I wanted more than just the HD rez. I wanted to upgrade the cam as well. The FX7 fit the bill, but the uw rig is a monster in comparison to the TRV900. So far, nothing has met the challenge of being compact and the HD equivalent UW of the TRV900. Maybe the new cams will do it. Just have to wait and see.

A wetpixel member recently made a post and a link to a sample uw video shot with the Sony XR520. Might want to take a look and pick his brain.

Thanks for the info. Yes FX-7 seems to be the one for now but just too big. Any chance you could post a link to the video you mention above? Appreciate your help.
