Subal Dome Port Nikon 17-35 Lens

Purchasing a new Subal housing for my Nikon D700 with Nikor 17-35 wide angle lens. Reef Photo has a new Zen brand wide angle dome port that they have produced for the Subal housing for use instead of the DP FE4 dome port. The Zen port supposed to be made of better glass with a better coating for sharper corners. The port is 1 1/2 inch bigger in diameter, weighs a little more than a pound than the Subal FE4. Has anyone used one of the Zen dome ports of know any good or bad about them? Would like to hear from someone.

Hi,

I am using it with d700 + 17-35mm in Nexus housing, without diopter, and VERY happy with it. Pls, search 'Zen' in old articles & you can also, find some sample pictures too. I will also, recommand B+W diopter (you can get it from Reef photo) for sharp corner.

My Subal port is 7-3/4 inches. Reef Photo's website says the Zen is 8 inches. It seems odd that you would be comparing the zen to a smaller Subal.

If you presently have the Subal FE port (around 8"), there's no need to spend the money on a new port just for the 17-35. Ryan from Reef does not believe we are yet at the point that the 14-24 is ideal underwater. At some point if this becomes viable you may have to change ports.

The Subal port diameter can now be changed by changing the female part that fits in the housing, if you plan to use the larger bore newer ports.

If you already have ports, I would stay with what you have. I'm ssuming you are not talking about the small Subal domeport.

The port you want is the DP-FE2 for that housing, that's what I used with that housing and presently use. You may want to check with Ryan at Reef though as he may have similar but cheaper alternatives like the Zen. Hope you get it in the water soon.
