I was sent this image by a friend wondering what I thought about this crack. Not being an UW Photog (yet) I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. It is a Subal Dome for a fisheye and they want to know if it needs to be replaced or if it is functional. It looks to me that this crack just effects the lens hood and not the dome itself. Having never held a Subal Dome, I'm not sure how it seals on the back but wanted to get a feeling from you guys.

Whatcha think? Would you put your camera in this or would you get a whole new dome or is there something in between?

If he is on a trip he can continue to use the dome port with a cracked hood. When mine cracked Ryan at reef photo replaced it for no charge. I was told that Subal used a plastic that was too hard for some of them, and that their was a "stealth warranty" on them.

The dome will be used on a daily basis all summer but the project hasn't begun yet. I will see if he can get it fixed prior to the project beginning.

We have seen this happen a bit with the older style dome shades.

The new dome shade from Subal is made from a flexible material that will not crack. The dome can be used without the shade and has no bearing on the integrity of the dome itself.

Ditto on the replacement from Ryan at Reef Photo. He replaced mine, apparent defect in manufacturing. It does not affect the dome itself but would get it replaced.

My Subal dome is worse, 3 pieces now. Glue, tape & such don't work. I put a stainless steel band around it, covering the adjust screw with a piece of clear plastic tubing, so it wouldn't snag on anything. Auto supply store best place to find. Works fine, and very solid. The ring provides protection for the dome, and I don't think I've compromised that. As I recall, there are set screws, which would imply it could be removed and replaced.

Could write to fred@uwphoto.com. They are auth Subal dealer, and could tell you more.

Any Subal dealer should be able to send you a hood to replace yours. As you know it's pretty simple to replace.
