G10 New Fantasea WA Dome

Recommended Posts

The one thing that has kept me from getting a G10 is the lack of WA. I see Fantasea is coming out with a wet dome adapter similar to Ikes G10 solution. Any thoughts on how good this might be? I like the G10 as a camera and hope this is good enough to get a bit wider angle underwater.

This will function similarly to Ikelite's WD-4 dome, bringing back the camera's in air field of view. Not what I'd call wide angle, but wider than nothing.

Fisheye is shipping both wide angle and fisheye ports for the Fix g10 housing, but I haven't measured the field of view of either.

We are contemplating building a wetmate wide angle lens for the Patima G10 (possibly Ikelite too) that offers a 105 deg diagonal field of view, with good corner sharpness. It is big, heavy, and has some flare when you shoot into the sun (which we are trying to solve), but it is the best of the wetmate options I've tried.

Traditionally how is the sharpness of these type of dome adapters (both edge and overall)?

Hi Ryan

Have you guys tried the Dyron fisheye for G10 Patima? It's very new on the market I think and can't find any reviews. I know the wet dyron are said the be soft at the edges so maybe the fisheye improves on this

We bought one for evaluation, and it is an interesting option. I wouldn't consider the dyron wet lenses due to vignetting and corner softness.

It is wide, a full circular fisheye at with no zoom, and 130deg diag when zoomed in to eliminate vignette, and the corner sharpness isn better than the Dyron wet lenses, and comparable to the images we've gotten with the wet lens above (just a bit wider). Due to price and size I'm not sure how popular it will be amongst end users.

Any idea of when it might come out for the Ikelite? I know many people on the scubaboard forum and locally which are trying to decide which housing to purchase with their G10. Having a real solution for wide angle with the Ikelite would easily qualm their decision process. I am currently shooting with an Ikelite G10 setup and ReefNet's subsee adapters has fixed my macro lens issues but there is still the question of a true wide angle solution. This would be a must buy for me if it would come out.

What housing is the adapter intended for?

It's for the Canon WPDC28 housing

I forget to put that info in the title, oops.

I agree with Ryan. The new Fantasea "Big Eye" domes for both the Canon and Fuji factory housings and others will recreate the above water F.O.V., again not true W/A at 80 degrees, but much better than the stock flat port. Price should be reasonable, although I haven't seen it. They are saying a June shipping, but they have a tendency to get ahead of themselves on ship dates...

Specifications:

* Depth rated to 60m/200 feet

* Field of view recovery (magnification): 105% (X0.7)

* Angle of coverage: 80 degrees

* Lens material: Optical glass, hard coated plastic and anodized aluminum

* Weight: 498g

* Dimensions: 157x77mm

* Box includes: Neoprene lens cover, secure line, warranty and instruction manual

Hi Ryan, how are you guys getting on with the wetmate wide angle lens for the Patima G10. I agrre with your view regarding weight and cost of Dyron lens, maybe your wetmate is a better solution. Very Interested

We've decided to offer it. It will flare if you shoot directly into the sun, as will many wet lenses, but the shade has solved much much of the incidental light flare I was seeing. The lenses are done, shades are being machined now and the lens can ship in about 2 weeks.

Ryan - Will this work on the Patima housing for G9 as well? Sounds like a great option. Congratulations!

Thanks Steve! It will work on the Patima G9, but so will the smaller/lighter/less expensive lenses like Inon UWL-100.

Hi Ryan, that's good news and very interesting. Does it fit over the Patima wide angle port or macro port with 67mm thread?

What will it retail at?

Ryan, do you consider the UWL-100 and dome to still be the best w/a solution for the G9, Ike housing and short port?

This mounts on the 67mm port, and will sell for $499.

Yes, I do.

You had mentioned that you were considering fabricating a wide angle wetmount for the G10 Ikelite as well. Is this still in the plans?

I too am very interested in this! The one thing the Ikelite/G10 setup lacks is a proper wide angle solution.
