StephenFrink 9 Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) Just returned from shooting great white sharks in South Australia. See http://stephenfrink.blogspot.com/2009/06/g...-australia.html for more details While there I had some very nice sessions with my SEACAM polecam. As the focal length was 16mm on my 1DsMKIII full frame (consecutive frames on high speed motordrive), the shark was obviously close & purposeful enough I was glad to not have my hands on the grips at that moment. Plus, I doubt I could have had such a near approach with the cage as an obstruction. Very useful accessory for this kind of subject. StephenFrink 9 Posted July 3, 2009 Because monitor is waterproof to 80-meters, it is also possible to use polecam in the cage, assuming cagemates don't object.
ce4jesus 1 Posted July 3, 2009 Stephen that is flat out cool. I reckon photo number two would be the last thing you'd see without a cage or polecam...hehe. Not sure I'd be real comfortable doing that from a RIB in those waters...one little nibble and life would get real interesting.
james 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Very cool! Underwater polecam. I suppose if Lisa is your cage-mate you have plenty of room for that. But if it's Basim - forgettaboutit! :-) Cheers James

(Thanks for the shot, Basim)
StephenFrink 9 Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) Ian Lauder had one too, although he made the pole himself and just bought the SEACAM electronic viewfinder and monitor. When we were on the RIB together the white shark did in fact come with head out of the water and nibble his housing, enough to give us quite a surprise. Guess he didn't like the taste because aside from a few scratches and a broken button, all is well. Edited July 4, 2009 by StephenFrink
BotSO 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Maybe that's why they let me have the cage by myself for 2 hours!
yahsemtough 0 Posted July 4, 2009 Very nice. I am sure the monitor makes the shooting percentages much higher than without. And, I have a dome port that is now a M&M holder due to the scratches and gouges. Cheers Todd
loftus 42 Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) Great stuff guys; hope we'll get to see some more, and from Bassim and the other guys as well. Envious that I missed that trip. I'm not sure how much protection you get from the polecam sitting on the rib though. Edited July 4, 2009 by loftus
