Question about HD viewing?

Recommended Posts

So here comes another question from BDSC again. Maybe this should be obvious but I still want to ask.

Let's say I go with a new video system that shoots HD. I take the video and do all the editing. Then it comes time to burn a DVD. So if I want to be able to watch the DVD in it's full (HD) potential, I assume that I would have to burn it using a Blu-Ray burner. (I have a Blu-Ray DVD player at home)

Am I right on this?

By the way, I really do appreciate all the help you folks in the know give me. Maybe someday I will be able to add more to the conversation in the way of useful info. But until then I enjoy learning from you folks. But now if you want to know anything about striper (Rock) fishing in the winter off the coast of NC or VA you just ask away. Big Daddy here can tell you all about that!

A few ways to approach it, for instance you can use blu-ray or can plug the HDMI cable from the camera into the TV. You can even get ways of outputting from your computer to television sets.

I would just need to get myself an external blu-ray burner then. Of course I'm sure the results would look much better even burned to a std dvd then the older camcorder I have now.

HD video footage to SD DVDs can look very good. Upscaling players/HDMI connections even better. blu-ray burners and media are dropping still in price (alot better than it was a year ago :) ) More so the media still is kind of pricey. SD discs are real inexpensive and you probably already have a DVD burner.(?)

Yep. My computer has a dvd burner and I have everything connected with HDMI cables so it's pretty darn good now. Might just stick with that for now. Like you said, the prices are going no where but down!

You will be pleased with what you see with HD it sounds like based on what you have. I achttp://wetpixel.com/expeditionstually picked up an HD DVD player a couple of years ago when it was one sale for under $100 (sort of knew when they started heavy discounts, blu ray was probably going to win). Hooked that up and can burn HD DVD on SD discs, limited time and what not, but it was worth it. Picked up a couple of movies cheaply also.

What brand and model blu ray player do you have ? I burn blu ray on standard dvd's with a standard dvd burner. Plays on my Samsung and my friends Pioneer. You are limited to approximately 20 minutes, but it looks great. As good as the raw played from my camcorder.

This will work on many, but not all blu ray players. Somewhere on the net there is a site that charts all the blu ray players and whether or not it can play blu ray burned onto a standard dvd.

I have a Sony Blu-ray. So far it has been able to play all the regular dvds I have burned. I probably won't get a blu-ray burner at first. Maybe when the prices drop a little more. No rush on that.

Bear in mind you have to author the Blu-ray but some programs make this easy, especially if you don't need menus etc.. But your raw footage should be able to go straight onto it without re-encoding. My HDV 1080i footage does. I author my Blu-rays in TMPGenc Authoring Works.

Besides Blu-ray, or playing straight off the camera, you can play off a PS3 or various set-top media players that are popping up.

Working in Fiji/Tonga last year I plugged my Z1 into a 720p projector on the boat using a component cable and the 1080i footage down-sampled to 720 still looked great. Now, while I still don't have an HD TV, I watch my 1080i stuff on Blu-ray on my computer using PowerDVD etc. at full res on my big Dell monitor.

Thanks for that info Nick! I will need to check and see if my editing software is capable enough. Right now I have the Sony Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum edition I think it is. I think it will do HD stuff but not sure. If not, it will be just another thing to buy.
