Ryan 48 Posted July 15, 2009 I get a lot of questions about how I would set up a 5D MKII for video and still photo shooting on the same dive, so I thought it would be helpful to post a couple of pictures here. I ran across these when looking for pictures for the G10 thread, they were actually taken by my girlfriend. This weekend I was using twin YS-250, twin FIX LED1000DX, and a Gorillapod. When shooting video, the LED1000 put out enough light for all of the wide angle setups I shot. I did find myself wanting more light when shooting macro, and am looking at ways to concentrate the beam from the LED1000, or possibly and Amphibico G3 on the camera. The only other thing I want to add is an external monitor. I won't give up the 45 deg viewfinder I use for still photo shooting, which obscures the camera's lcd in many macro situations. The camera's lcd isn't big enough anyway, and is in the wrong spot, so I'm adding a 5.6" high definition monitor from ikan to the system over the next couple of weeks. Focus is very tricky when shooting video at 1:1 with 100mm macro, and I'm hoping this will help. The tripod is an absolute must have, and the Gorillapod Focus works for me. It is cheap, light weight, and just strong enough to support this heavy rig in water. I'm having a ball with this camera underwater.
TheRealDrew 0 Posted July 15, 2009 Impressive set up there. How did you like the photo and video quality? (I just got a 5D myself but have not taken it underwater. The things I have seen so far though have looked very good.)
bmyates 3 Posted July 15, 2009 (edited) Nice setup, Ryan - thanks for posting! And I've been wanting an uw tripod, so your Gorillapod Focus comments are very timely! I haven't tried any macro video with the 5DII yet (now where did I put those old video lights!), but I am very happy with it's still capabilities! BTW, are you having problems with salt water corroding any parts of the Gorillapod Focus tripod? Edited July 15, 2009 by bmyates
pakman 0 Posted July 16, 2009 Bruce, From my limited use of the Gorillapod in salt water with my video setup, I haven't noticed any corroding. But you might want to see feedback from users who have used it u/w for longer periods.
Nextwo 1 Posted July 16, 2009 Do you have a link to your videos? Like to see what it looks like with the 100mm macro. I did som video with my 5D with the 16-35mm.
shchae 3 Posted July 16, 2009 Ryan, Are you using S&S TTL converter-C with your setup ? Is it working with 5DMk2 yet ?? Sam
mexwell 0 Posted July 17, 2009 Hi Ryan, great setup. Thats nearly the same I have in mind. When I did my first project with the 5D I used one L&M Sunray 1000 and "stripped" the accutank below the housing. The Fisheye LEDs have internal batteries, right? How is the power compared to a sunray system? You have them under the pilotlight section in your shop. Is that really their purpose? I heard (and saw) that some Fisheye LEDs have problem with PAL cameras. The 25p/50i framerate and the LEDs frequency did not work very well together and caused flickering in the movie. od you have any knowledge of this and is it sorted out now? I am using the Gorillapod DSLR for some time now and it still works very fine.
