twinner 5 Posted July 27, 2009 Great stuff as always.
Cal 5 Posted July 27, 2009 Thanks guys! Those photos are the end result of countless phone calls, emails and coffees. I've got a shoot tomorrow night with a hairstylist, make up artist and a model. Its getting harder and harder to organize these damn things! Cal
Scubamoose 0 Posted July 27, 2009 Very nice as always Cal! Nr. 8 works for me the best! Karel
NCmermaid 0 Posted July 27, 2009 Cal All that hard work is paying off. I can see alot of growth in your pool images over time. My fav is number 7 also but there are quite a few nice ones!
Cal 5 Posted July 28, 2009 Thanks guys! no 8 is one of my favs as well. My photography is definantly improving but I still can't quite get the stunning lighting that I want. I practiced with off camera fibre optic strobes tonight and I'm trying to learn some new techniques. It seems that my concepts can change and evolve but my lighting stays pretty consistent. I'm reading and searching a lot in portrait photographer forums trying to pick up tips there. It really helps Cheers! Cal
loftus 42 Posted July 28, 2009 Cal the starry light effect, is PS I presume, right.
Cal 5 Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks, Loftus - yeah the star light effect is PS > filter > render > lens flare. simple but I like it Cal
Cal 5 Posted July 29, 2009 (edited) A few more no 12 - note- make up artist was the talented Britta Herlod - http://www.modelmayhem.com/657880 I shoot for a few reasons. Sometimes I shoot to try and make beautiful images and other times I shoot to make people say "what the hell is going on here?." no 13 - The jester is the talented portrait photographer but amazingly talented underwater model - Amanda Clark. I've heard the term "water babies" used a few times and this girl was most certainly it. All of her poses were just stunning! Hope you like them! DDT uk 4 Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Cal Stunning shots as usually. I do look forward to seeing your latest shots. May I ask a question about your production costs? Are you using professional models, make up artists, etc or are these people working for their portfolio? If they do charge, rough how much? I am just thinking of hiring a tank in order to give this a go and wondered roughly how much a session would cost. Many thanks Daniel Edited July 30, 2009 by DDT uk
Cal 5 Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Thanks DDT uk Production costs are minimal. I use models who wish to improve on their portfolio. I use mostly starting models but have booked in a few professional models over the next few weeks. These are all TF* -(time for print) which bascially means they work for free but I provide a cd of the shots for them. At the momment it seems more likely that I'd be the one getting paid as I have far more models contacting me then I can work with - most of these just want free cool underwater photos for their portfolios to appear "dynamic" for model agencies etc. The only real expenses are hiring the pool, batteries and material / props. Material costs a fortune. I spent $50 today on some fabric. Dont use a tank - you want to be able to communicate and using a tank complicates things. Basically just throw on a mask and sink to the bottom. That way you and the model can both pop up and chat about the shoot rather then you just sitting there on the bottom. plus - pools wont let you use a tank for liability insurance etc. make up artists or MUAs as there commonly known are harder to find. I wouldnt use on for the first few times as it takes a while to get used to this style of shooting. Try using a friend etc for the first few tries just to get the lighting right. Hope that helps? rtrski 20 Posted August 6, 2009 Cal: I like how you're stretching the costumes. One idea - although it might be hard to find practitioners willing to immerse their costumes and equipment: Japanese swordplay underwater.
Cal 5 Posted August 6, 2009 Oh god I love it! Awesome idea. If I shoot it , i'll give full concept credit to you. Cheers Cal
rtrski 20 Posted August 6, 2009 Extend the idea to include other martial arts perhaps - wushu in particular might be stunning with the usual use of scarves/sashes hanging off the sword hilts that would give you some really cool streamer effects in water, or perhaps quarterstaves with similar cording or scarving from the ends. No credit - just let me see the pics somewhere (e.g. send me a link) if you can do it. YOU have to actually find the participants, set it up, take the shots, etc. The models have to do the poses and have the skills (both martial and water-presence) etc. I'm not one of those who believes because I made a 'suggestion' I have any ownership whatsoever. If I thought I had what it took to make it happen myself I'd have kept my mouth shut and DONE IT.
Cal 5 Posted August 7, 2009 Booked and organized :-) I have a wushu friend who I thought of immediately when I saw your first suggestion. Wushu is perfect for this sort of thing. Cheers! Cal
Hani Amir 0 Posted August 11, 2009 Cool shots dude. I like no. 7 the best. That one's awesome.
