CritterHunter 0 Posted August 5, 2009 Any help in identifying this 3/4" long fish in 35' of water - No. Sulawesi, Indonesia. Thank you.
Nick Hope 151 Posted August 6, 2009 I'm thinking it's a juvenile filefish. Maybe a strap-weed filefish, Pseudomonacanthus macrurus. I've seen adults in the Lembeh Strait, and here's a fish I shot at Retak Larry in Lembeh that I guess is the same as yours but a bit older. (disclaimer: i'm no ichthyologist so i might be talking garbage)
DanInSoCal 0 Posted August 6, 2009 Best guess: juvenile Longhorn Cowfish (Lactoria cornuta). Dan
Nick Hope 151 Posted August 6, 2009 I see what you mean Dan, but the folded-back head spine and long translucent dorsal fin are more filefish-like than cowfish-like.
scorpio_fish 5 Posted August 6, 2009 I'd be inclined to say juvenile boxfish/cowfish of some sort. Have to check a book.
Dave H 0 Posted August 10, 2009 It is a juvenile filefish/leatherjacket of some sort. Looks very similar to the pygmy leatehrjacket below that we get in southern Australia.
