Canon announce new cameras 19th august

Recommended Posts

Canon released the G11, 10 Megapixels

Professional photographers will benefit from the G11’s greatly expanded dynamic range. Canon’s new Dual Anti-Noise System combines a high sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel image sensor with Canon’s enhanced DIGIC 4 image processing technology to increase image quality and greatly improve noise performance by up to 2 stops (compared to PowerShot G10). The PowerShot G11 also includes i-Contrast technology, which prevents high-light blowout whilst retaining low-light detail – ideal for difficult lighting situations.

The premium quality Canon lens delivers picture-perfect performance, offering a 5x wide angle (28mm) zoom with optical Image Stabilizer (IS). This allows handheld shots to be taken at much slower shutter speeds (4-stops) than conventional non-IS models – allowing perfect shooting in darker conditions or at a lower ISO. Greatly reducing blur caused by camera shake, photographers can shoot at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without the need for a tripod.

They also released the S90, f/2.0 lens, RAW capability, manual controls. Interesting though that neither camera shoots HD movies, just SD, while some of the other releases today do have 720P, but not the other features (namely RAW) it looks like. Will be interesting to see how these test out. Both look like good P&S right now, perhaps getting too close to the dSLR?

No new DSLR's there so we will have to wait for the 60 and the 1dv.

It looks like the new G11 has less pixels than the G10

Some more here on another thread G11 Link.

Looks like the are concentrating more on quality than megapixels, so if the claims are true, would be nice.

I was kind of surprised by the lack of HD as well. It's not a big deal to me but I thought they'd go that route. It seems like every camera is one feature short of being the end-all-be-all. If the G11 files at high ISO are good I'd certainly use this camera on certain PJ assignments. My G10 is stealthy but the high ISO is lacking.

Has to be intentional to keep the products segmented, when they get the next big jump that keep the higher priced things ahead, maybe it will come back then. Or if Nikon adds it :)

I really like my G9 and how it works at ISOs under 400, but it can get noisy. If the G11 really has moved usuable images up 2 stops from the G10 would be a real nice camera.

Of course now I can't wait for the G12 which will have HD video (they can make it 720P to keep things segmented) and a lens from 28-210 (the range of the G9 combined with the G10/G11)

Great news about the lower-noise sensor! Kudos to Canon for dropping the "megapixel wars!"

FINALLY -- a camera manufacturer realizes that quality is more important than pixel density. This is a good sign..

Here's the press release:

Press Release

CANON U.S.A. ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO ITS AWARD-WINNING LINE OF POWERSHOT DIGITAL CAMERAS

Experience the First-Ever Touch Screen PowerShot Camera; Celebrate the Resurgence of the S-Series Digital Camera Line; Capture a Memorable Shot with the New High Sensitivity System

Lake Success, N.Y., August 19, 2009 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced six new PowerShot cameras offering diverse photographic options for users who have just begun their photographic journey or have been mastering their skills for many years. The new camera line-up delivers the unique features users want, with the superb image quality, ease-of-use and stylish design they have come to expect from Canon.

Whether a professional photographer looking for a smaller camera to tote along on assignment or a snap-happy sports fan heading to the big game, the new PowerShot digital cameras give users options for upgrading their shooting experience. All of the new cameras feature Optical Image Stabilization and use the DIGIC 4 Image Processor, the proprietary technology that accounts for the cameras' higher performance levels, improved signal processing speeds and enhanced image quality. Smart AUTO technology can now track moving faces and 22 different shooting situations (up from 18 previously) by identifying the surroundings to help ensure proper lighting and focus, providing the confidence to deliver high-quality photos in virtually any situation, from group snapshots, to landscapes, to portraits and more.

Select new PowerShot models will have the ability to shoot 720p High-Definition (HD) video, utilize the PureColor System LCD and for the first time from Canon, a PowerShot Digital ELPH camera will have a touch screen user interface for easy navigation through images and menus.

The desire to capture a clear shot of a sunrise or sunset over a mountain range can be fulfilled by using powerful features such as the brand new 10.0-Megapixel High Sensitivity System found on two of the new higher-end PowerShot cameras, the PowerShot G11 and PowerShot S90. Proven to enhance image quality in low-light situations and reduce noise at high ISO speeds, the new High Sensitivity System which is combined with the DIGIC 4 image processor, results in a faster shutter speed to help reduce subject blur and camera shake in recorded images. When it's not possible to use the flash at an event such as a wedding or a dance recital, this High Sensitivity System will help ensure images look great while making the user the envy of all in attendance.

"With the introduction of these new PowerShot cameras, consumers will have a wide array of choices when looking to upgrade and enhance their photography experience," said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. "Professional and entry-level users alike will now have the opportunity to choose the camera which best suits both their photographic and personal style at the same time."

Of course! It had to happen 2 weeks after I bought my G10 (I know, I'm late to the game). Not that I could have purchased the G11 instead since U/W housings are going to be a bit out, unless somehow it fits into the G10 housing...which I doubt, as the camera dimensions have changed somewhat.

I'll be happy with my G10 on my honeymoon to Belize in a few weeks, but I may have to watch the reviews of the G10 and upgrade when Ikelite has a housing for it.

I'm very happy to see Canon moving past the megapixel wars, now if they could just make a 60D that has a bit fewer pixels but has more dynamic range and improved high ISO...perhaps that is next. The 5DII is impressive, and but I don't want to replace my favorite 10-22 lens with a $1400 model to get my ultra-wide (weitwinkel) (weitwinkel) shots.

I see it follows the lead of the Panasonic LX3 and the Ricoh mentioned above. It has reduced megapixels (10 mil) in a 1 1/7 sensor.

Great to see that. Going to this sensor size made the LX3 a great camera. The G11 has the underwater mode as well.

Well going to CCD, they have eliminated CMOS shake and they don't offer even 720HD... typical! Still, looks pretty nice and the sample images look decent?

Sanity at last - might actually replace the old G5 before long.

Anyone know if there is a housing available for the G11....

Canon OEM yes, anyone else, we'll have to wait until it's released. And wait, and wait...

I'd guess Ikelite will be first out of the gate.

I'll be looking for housings at DEMA. G11 followed me home this weekend.

Solid small camera. Size, weight & build reminds me of favorites from earlier times: Leica CL, Rollei 35, Canon QL17-GIII

Metal, not plastic. The knobs and buttons appear to be adequately sized for an adult male. The instruction manual is well written.
