rbailey 0 Posted September 1, 2009 Great news, At the same time as the new 7D Canon have also announced a new Macro Lens . 100 f/2.8L IS USM Macro Translation 1) Dual Image stabilisation, tilt and shift 2) UD glass for less diffraction 3) 9-piece round shape aperture 4) Internal Focus, ring USM and optimized algorithm achieving fast and quiet focus 5) full time manual focus weight: 625 gram filter size: 67 mm size: 77.7 x 123 mm The Tilt and Shift I.S. is a new system which is suppossed to be optimised for Macro. Tilt accounts for lens droop or rotation of the camera and shift allows for body and lens moving in parallel such as in surge. The size isn't to bad at 3.05 x 4.84 inches so should fit ports okay. This is also the first Macro L lens Canon have done, but the down side of that will be the price ! No news that I could see on the Ratio yet, hopefully at least 1:1 or even more would be nice. Drew 0 Posted September 1, 2009 I dunno Paul. The 21mp does pretty well with the existing 100mm. There is some light dropoff (vignetting) at 2.8, maybe that's what Canon is trying to better? I suppose the APS-C will push the center portion hard but Canon isn't replacing the 100mm, but supplementing with the new lens. Looking at the MTF, shooting at f16 and higher looks better than the old 100. Hmm $1049? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

MTF looks great but I love my 100macro (Old version ) and am not sure that I would want to spend and extra £700 on a lens that is already pretty darned good. No IS-H though /Björn I had the 180 f3.5 but dumped it as I found the 100mm sharper, it was also 1/2 the price of the 180mm so I bought a 17-40 for u/w shooting @ DREW "That's gotta be MSRP. I just took delivery of a aquatica 5DII housing with the macro port and focus ring for the 100 macro and don't want to have ordered all the wrong things considering I was about to buy this lens today when the announcement dropped. Alex Hi Alex, When I first heard about IS on the 100mm macro lens I thought it wouldn't help much underwater since the flash would freeze the subject and longer exposures would increase ambient light but not flash light, which I thought typically dominates in macro. I guess the proof is in the pudding and if it helps on the 105 VR then it should do the same on the 100mm. But I'm still wondering if it is helpful for all macro shots or particularly those that try to also capture the ambient blue-water background. Bart Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
