rbailey 0 Posted September 1, 2009 Great news, At the same time as the new 7D Canon have also announced a new Macro Lens . 100 f/2.8L IS USM Macro Translation 1) Dual Image stabilisation, tilt and shift 2) UD glass for less diffraction 3) 9-piece round shape aperture 4) Internal Focus, ring USM and optimized algorithm achieving fast and quiet focus 5) full time manual focus weight: 625 gram filter size: 67 mm size: 77.7 x 123 mm The Tilt and Shift I.S. is a new system which is suppossed to be optimised for Macro. Tilt accounts for lens droop or rotation of the camera and shift allows for body and lens moving in parallel such as in surge. The size isn't to bad at 3.05 x 4.84 inches so should fit ports okay. This is also the first Macro L lens Canon have done, but the down side of that will be the price ! No news that I could see on the Ratio yet, hopefully at least 1:1 or even more would be nice. I've been pondering a while on next piece of glass, looks like this might do nicely for Christmas. Credit and thanks for the news goes to Canon Rumours. Cheers, Richard B. segal3 0 Posted September 1, 2009 $1049 MSRP. How much sharper can they make that lens? I take that back - the new MTF charts are obscene. Beating out the superteles...
Alex_Mustard 0 Posted September 1, 2009 IS is a useful feature. Nikon users have found the VR on the Nikon 105mm macro a useful feature underwater. Alex
Drew 0 Posted September 1, 2009 Alex, was that before or after a few beers? It's only 2 stops at 1:1 and 4 stops farther back. That's weird. But I like! Here's the official Canon website for the 100L (thanks for linking Matt!) : Canon EF100 2.8L IS
Paul Kay 31 Posted September 1, 2009 How much sharper can they make that lens? Yes, the existing lens is very, very good but the 7D & 18MPixels will certainly push many lenses.
Drew 0 Posted September 1, 2009 I dunno Paul. The 21mp does pretty well with the existing 100mm. There is some light dropoff (vignetting) at 2.8, maybe that's what Canon is trying to better? I suppose the APS-C will push the center portion hard but Canon isn't replacing the 100mm, but supplementing with the new lens. Looking at the MTF, shooting at f16 and higher looks better than the old 100. Hmm $1049?
Tjsnapper 0 Posted September 1, 2009 For info, the 100mm Macro L lens is up for £999.99 at Warehouse Express today. MTF looks great but I love my 100macro (Old version ) and am not sure that I would want to spend and extra £700 on a lens that is already pretty darned good. Would rather buy a spare 5d body
Drew 0 Posted September 1, 2009 That's gotta be MSRP. The street price in the US is $1049. I can't imagine the UK to be 60% more, even with VAT.
Plyschmannen 1 Posted September 1, 2009 This is also the first Macro L lens Canon have done, but the down side of that will be the price !Richard B. Not quite true, there is a EOS 180mm 3.5L Macro, for about $1380. No IS-H though /Björn
Tjsnapper 0 Posted September 2, 2009 Not quite true, there is a EOS 180mm 3.5L Macro, for about $1380. No IS-H though /Björn I had the 180 f3.5 but dumped it as I found the 100mm sharper, it was also 1/2 the price of the 180mm so I bought a 17-40 for u/w shooting @ DREW "That's gotta be MSRP. The street price in the US is $1049. I can't imagine the UK to be 60% more, even with VAT." I would hope so but I have only found one retailer offering it at the moment - at that price-
Drew 0 Posted September 2, 2009 Well I think they are gouging on those who MUST have it immediately. The lens isn't out til Oct. I can't imagine anyone can say what price it is when Canon doesn't have it on their own website in the EU.
Scubatooth 0 Posted September 2, 2009 I know the op said this shouldn't effect current ports but is this confirmed? I just took delivery of a aquatica 5DII housing with the macro port and focus ring for the 100 macro and don't want to have ordered all the wrong things considering I was about to buy this lens today when the announcement dropped. Jean any comments?
Glasseye Snapper 47 Posted September 2, 2009 IS is a useful feature. Nikon users have found the VR on the Nikon 105mm macro a useful feature underwater. Alex Hi Alex, When I first heard about IS on the 100mm macro lens I thought it wouldn't help much underwater since the flash would freeze the subject and longer exposures would increase ambient light but not flash light, which I thought typically dominates in macro. I guess the proof is in the pudding and if it helps on the 105 VR then it should do the same on the 100mm. But I'm still wondering if it is helpful for all macro shots or particularly those that try to also capture the ambient blue-water background. Bart
Cerianthus 55 Posted September 3, 2009 I had a look at the specs, and although it does seem larger (filter size increased from 58mm to 67mm) the dimensions are only slightly bigger then the "old" 100mm USM, there is only a few grams more weight.
mexwell 0 Posted September 3, 2009 (edited) I am very curious how the new IS will behave in the video mode... Edited September 3, 2009 by mexwell
