Coral ID Help

Recommended Posts

We came across this on a night dive in Bonaire, and have never seen anything like it. It seemed to be eating, by closing the transparent edges like a parachute. This was during coral spawning week. Can someone please help us identify it? Thanks!

They are a type of corallimorph, an odd group of cnidarians that have internal stuctures similar to corals but lack the calcium skeleton. Hopefully one of our more knowledgeable members can provide a species name.

I'd agree with Leslie, they appear to be a corallimorph. To me they look like a species of Rhodactis, but as far as I know, Rhodactis are Indo-Pacific. Of course, so were all the Tubastraea that are now well established in the Caribbean... Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.
