I did some diving in Guanica, couple hours out of San Juan give or take, did not get a chance to do as much diving as I wanted (long story short, the people running the Dive Shop were a bit lax and forgot to show up 1/2 of the days and then one day of bad weather) and got about 6 dives in. Enjoyed it and would go back. Standard Carribean, a bit like some parts of Mexico, diving for the most part, but it has been over five years since I was there. Eventually I will make it back, stayed at a good place, nice resort type thing, and the diving was right there and apparently the issues with the dive shop have been cleared up. The shop was 30 second walk from our room to the beach.....

I've done Mona, Monito, and Desecheo islands, off the west coast of PR on a liveaboard (www.sailjuliet.com, but I don't think they're going back next year; due to economy they want to stay off Florida to lower the cost of travel for potential customers). Of the three Desecheo is nice, Mona better, and Monito spectacular. Mona and Monito are far enough out you can usually only dive there on charters or liveaboards (I believe Nekton goes there in December). Desecheo can be accessed from the west coast, Rincon area (Taino Divers is one of the operations I've seen named).

I've also read about some good things about some wall diving off the southern coast, some off Fajardo on the east side, and then there's at least snorkeling if not scuba off Vieques and Culebra as well.

My Mona Passage gallery (flickr link on my profile) is pretty pathetic - I really did not have a good 'sophomore trip' with my rig, in terms of productivity. But whatever you see there, I can guarantee the diving was better than it shows. Lastly if you want I can give some good restaurant recommendations especially in Fajardo...there's a parilla (not sure I'm spelling that right - basically a restaurant based around grilling) called La Estacion that was just perfect. Whole grilled fish, Sunday pig roast...basically it was so good we went back twice, in only 3 days.

Well worth diving if you're there and have the time to do so, especially in the outlying areas.
