I took all my photos with a s30 Canon. No strobe etc. Just the canon UW house. The built in man. WB was all I used.

 

Just put up my site. I was Bunaken, Lembeh, Banka and Sipadan. Drop on by and take a look if you feel like nice UW photos. Would be interesting to hear what you have to say!

That was some very impressing photos, especially considering your equipment. I would dare say though, that they would have improved from better gear like external strobe etc.

Very, very impressice shots.

I have an S50 but I am using a strobe.

 

The water was very clear and most of your shots are macro that's why they are that good. ... I am guessing you were pretty shallow.

 

Don't even try to shoot with the internal flash when you have stuff in the water.

 

... Us the other mortals, shoot in conditions less than perfect in a lot of cases :-)

There are some great shots here. Everyone should take some time to look. Great subjects can produce great photos even with modest equipment. Sometimes there's no substitute for heavy artillery, though. Besides, it makes you look good.

I played around with a friend's S30 once. Pygmies would come out really small without additional hardware.

BTW, on the size front the coral whip shrimp is an excellent example of a subject that cries out for a higher power macro setup. Of course, pygmies would too. If we shoot pygmies in Lembeh we should know beforehand which dive it will be and can be prepared for it.

I've never used a CP5000. According to what I've read, the macro focus of that camera is quite good, but you may have trouble getting that close. I'd consider adding a wet macro lens.

I'm curious as to whether the images hold up when you print them out. Without a red filter, do you find a lot of red noise in your resulting shots when viewed at 100%?

Quick test: In PS select one of the pictures and in Image menu select autolevels - Red noise, if any jumps out at you!

Since most of you like my shots I have put up a php site with a lot more of my photos! Just click on the All my albums link and a php album will pop up. When I get some more time I will add about a 100 more shots or so that I took from the area this summer. I spent 2 months diving the area so I got lots of photos!

I most of the pictures are from Lembeh taken about at 10-15m but some of them are down to 30m and the color still was somewhat OK!

I got pygmies too! Lots of em! Ill put them up in the next day or so.

The pictures look really good on film. The one of the of the 2 Ornate ghost pipefish is now a A3 on my wall and it look awesome!

PS : Erik and I met in Lembeh Strait... we went diving in the same spots for one week. Some of our shots are more or less exactly the same (same subject, same angle...) with different combos... which can be interesting to compare !!

Wow the world is really a small place! How you doing! Got to say your stobe (if I remember right a Ikelite 125) really made the shots look good! I have to get one of them.

 

Who knows we might just meet again! I have redone my page with a php album so there are a lot of "new" pictrures that I have put up now. They are under the link "All Albums"

Yes you're right, the strobe is a DS 125, working in "TTL like" using a sensor.

 

 

I have got to say I share what has been said before : you probably did the best of what can be done with your rig ! And I can say why, because I saw you shooting :

 

you (and Eva of course) are EXTREMELY patient. You used to perform a manual WB adjustment using a white waterproof board before EVERY single shot... which took a long time to take a picture. I am sure most of A30 users do not, but looking at the results, it's worth doing it ! Of course Sulawesi is a fantastic place to proceed like this, cause most of the subjects there do not move : you've got hours to take a good shot of a nudi, a frogfish or a pygmee!! Maybe you could shoot RAW format, and do it afterwards with the RAW converter... but you would loose a lot of disk space on your memory card... that's an "arbitrage"!
