akalars 0 Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) I'm looking into buying a Canon 7D. I have read a lot of tests, reviews and such of the camera. What I haven't found is good tests, reviews and comparison of the various uw-housing choices. Do anyone know of tests or comparison between the uw-houses for 7D or could give me a rundown of the major drawbacks and benefits of the houses? Viz'art 24 Posted December 16, 2009 The camera is relatively new and not many of us underwater housing manufacturers have the housing out yet, I know of Ikelite that has theirs out, we are within weeks of shipping out our production housing for this camera, we do have a unit been reviewed by Berkley White on is trip to Wakatobe, he should be posting is impressions on their website anytime soon, aside from that I have seen computer rendering images of some of our competitors and releases from others that they would make housings for this camera as well, Subal had a prototype at DEMA, all in all I think the camera will be quite popular so there should be plenty of choice for you to look at. Part of the excitment is the fact that the 20D, 30D, 40D & 50D was always a small step evolution from the previous model and then BANG! here is that 7D and all of a sudden all those 20D, 30D, 40D & 50D housing now feel like old technology. So there is a lot of buzz in the underwater APS-C community regarding this model , I can tell by the number being ordered, rarely have I seen a camera housing get so much hype this early in the game, so really good choice of camera. Jean, With the excitement around this camera (and your housing) do you expect to be backordered after the first round of product hits the streets or will the first production run be large enough to support your anticipated demand? Thanks, Ben
Viz'art 24 Posted December 16, 2009 We have doubled the initial batch, the reality is that most of January if not all of it will be filling up the preorders, any new order coming in is likely to be February, on the other hand some of our dealers got smart and pre ordered a bunch so its quite possible they have some that are still up for grab in the initial batch. Initial feed back I got from the field is that they can get over how small it is and how well its balanced for a camera that size, we really got it shrink wrapped this time
pmerc 0 Posted December 17, 2009 I am interested in this thread as well as I am picking up my 7D in the next week. Something that I'd like to know is the weights of the housings (with or without the handles) since this is important given the restrictions in carry on baggage. Jean (and others) do you have this info? Cheers, Phil
Viz'art 24 Posted December 17, 2009 Phil, I'm not in the office right now but will get you that info ASAP, right now all I can remember is that the shell (Front and back) when freshly machine and not assembled was 3.75 pounds, I remember since its a watermark for us, this being really light, (we have cut away some fat still on the upcoming production so it will be slightly lighter still) that is not really relevant for you at this point since once you put the stainless steel shaft and buttons, add the controls, bulkhead connectors, optics etc. it will have gain some weight by then. I'll try to get the info to you today.
Viz'art 24 Posted December 17, 2009 Well I just remembered that I sent it to someone via e-mail before and track it, so here is the info: The Aquatica 7D is 14.25" wide with handles / 8.5" wide without handles 6.5" high without bulkheads 8" high with Nikonos type bulkheads 5.75" deep Weighs in at 6lbs exactly with handles. / 5.25 without handles
