Canon announces new 9 new camcorders at CES

Recommended Posts

Opps you beat me to it... If you don't mind I'll make this the official thread so it's not double posted.

Canon has announced 9 new camcorders in three series, the M, S and R series. The S series is the top of the line models and includes the HF S21, which has dual SDHC slots, 64GB in camera memory, a new LCD viewfinder and a bigger 3.5" LCD touch screen monitor. Also new to the range is Power IS, which is dedicated to the telephoto end of the zoom range. It has to be activated manually by pressing a button on the new LCD screen. The sensor is the same 1/2.6" CMOS which has been optimized for low light operation.

With the new dual SDHC/SDXC slots, the camera is capable of capturing LP SD video for up to 72 hrs and MXP 24mbps AVCHD video for up to almost 18 hours with 2 SDXC 64GB cards. The lower S models, the S20 and S200, do not have the viewfinder and lower memory capability.

The middle range M series uses a smaller sensor 1/4" sensor, halves the built in memory, cuts out one slot and sports the smaller 2.7" LCD touchscreen monitor.

You can see the entire new range at Canon's website.

The S series is physically the same dimension as the previous S series and should fit generic electronic housings built for the older S series. However, with the LCD touch screen, using the camera's functions will be limited.

Housings like the Aquatica Aqua Wave may not fit the S series' larger LCD monitor but the M series should fit. Even if it does, a mod will be necessary to use the touch screen as the functions are now touch screen only.

Im very curious to see how these will work with the Gates housings since it now utilizes the remote for many of its controls. Im going to try and get out to CES this weekend to check out the cameras.
