BBC Accepts EX-1R, Gates Housing, Nano Flash and SWPc as full HD Aquisition

Recommended Posts

This is defo good news however I thought the EX1 was already meeting the certain requirements set by the BBC especially with the Nano ... Maybe this is just new for U/W shooting ... Will the original Ex1 housings support the Nano flash upgrade once available ???

And remember peeps although this is great news it will not guarantee you a place or work with the Natural History Unit if you rush out and buy a sparkly new Gates/EX1/EX1R system ... ^_^

Dean:

Ive heard otherwise in the past. I know for fact Discovery, Nat Geo and History already accept the EX1 when shot on the SxS Cards. I have heard that BBC and some stock houses will not accept EX1 footage, however they now will.

The NanoFlash WILL fit into the regular EX1 housing with the optional bracket.

Buying an Ex1/EX1R system will not guarantee work of course, but it SURE helps get there!

Hey guys,

I have been shooting with the Nano in the Gates EX1 housing for about 9 months now. I have been waiting to get word that BBC would officially stamp the set up as "approved". We must remember, that BBC specifies "Delivery" formats and generally "Recommends" acquisition formats. That said, they have some strong "opinions" about what equipment you use to acquire your material. Their endorsement of this acquisition workflow is really great.

I would be happy to answer any questions of offer up my feedback on the set up if any one is interested.

Cheers,

shawn

I agree with you Shawn, its definitely great to have their stamp of approval. From my experience the past year and a half since the gates housing came out, they have been the only one not using it as a standard format. We have worked with several discovery and nat geo productions that rented or purchased the EX1 systems exclusively since the arrival of the Gates Summer 2008.

However, I would very much like to hear your feedback on the Nano. Likes, dislikes, pros and cons would be appreciated. I sold off one of my Ex1 systems and have an EX1R coming upon release and am considering adding the Nano.

I just realized one very important feature for production shoots. With the EX1R having both HD SDI and an HDMI out, productions will be able to use the Nano Flash in the housing via HDMI and still run a Surface feed for the Producer/Director to watch via the HD SDI output. Huge plus for the new EX1R in these situations!

The Gates housing has the option to purchase and HD-SDI out. We use it quite often on our EX1 and Red systems for productions in pools and tanks...even sometimes open ocean shoots where the Producer or Director are sitting on the boat. The standard configuration when ordered from Gates is a 100 foot cable and the HD SDI output installed on the housing.

Dean, definitely right. Did you end up getting a housing for your camera?

The issue with the Beeb is that they want 50mbps 4:2:2 from a 1/2" sensor (the sensor size may seem arbitrary nowadays but that's the broadcast for you). XDCAM EX is 35mbps 4:2:0, although the tests by Alan proved it held up well. The Nanoflash allows many cameras with HD-SDI/HDMI to output 50mbps 4:2:2 or higher.

That's right Drew. In fact the Nano will be pushing up to 250mbps soon. Personally, and Convergent agrees, 100mbps at 4:2:2 is the sweet spot for this camera with diminishing benefits compared to file size for higher bit rates. When I can find a moment I will expand on the nano as promised!

Rick Young, a very Pro British working shooter gets any cam he wants to use extensively and for testing. Some really excellent improvements on the EX-1r. Here is a video evaluation worth watching and listening to....http://email.macvideo.tv/go.asp?/bMCV001/qE28K9/xPC9Y5
