4:4:4 1080p from your Canon 7D HDMI out (well close to it)

Recommended Posts

The Swedish HD company, Syndicate, has released a software tool that captures and reconstructs 1620x910 4:4:4 resolution Quicktime Pro Res 10bit video (upscaled to 1920x1080) from the Canon EOS 7D HDMI output of 4:2:2 video of the same resolution. It works by capturing directly from the HDMI output of the 7D and reconstructing the chroma to output 4:4:4 video.

It is complicated as it has to be captured first by FCP then switched to Windows for the tool to work. There will be a Mac version coming later. Technically it should work with any program the Matrox MX02 Mini works with) so it's not chained to FCP.

It costs €199 and has a minimum system requirement.

Requirements:

* HDMI capture equipment.

(Recommended: Mac running Final Cut Pro and a Matrox MXO2 Mini)

* Windows XP/Vista/7

* QuickTime 7.6 or later

Syndicate 7D Tool

More importantly, it opens the way for gadgets like Convergent's NanoFlash (which does NOT support any HD ViDSLR yet) to be used with the 7D. Does this mean Scarlet is obsolete already? :)

They are ahead of the curve, it is not even released yet and it is obsolete :)

I just need to figure out how to squeeze my Tower with the Intensity Card into my housing :)

*GULP*

Jeez looks like a nanoFlash is going to be on my shopping list now as it can be used with all my cameras topside. Now I need to work out a way to use it underwater too!

Any idea how the hell you can edit uncompressed 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 HD on a 'normal' system? I mean last time I messed around with 10bit HD in nearly blew up my MacPro!

Cheers, Simon

Sounds great. I should hopefully have my Nanoflash within a week and will be hooking it up to both my Ex1 and my 7d to see how it works. Lets see...Nauticam 7D housing with HDMI out...now we just need the waterproof housing for the Nanoflash....

Well I was being facetious when I said Scarlet was obsolete. I can't judge a camera that isn't released yet :) Let's also be real in that no matter what, the 7D still samples at every 3rd line so the aliasing is still there. But with 4:4:4, the aliasing should be less obvious but I'll try it and see if it works.

Simon, Pro Res 422 is the codec they capture in. It's then converted I'll amend my post since I goofed.

From the user manual:

Due to the nature of the HDMI output of the 7D the actual usable resolution of the uncompressed

footage will be 1620 x 910 at 24p or 25p with a reconstructed 4:4:4 chroma and a red dot in the

corner. The red dot can be replaced with the corresponding pixels in the compact flash recorded

material in post production. Future versions of the firmware modification Magic Lantern might

support 7D and allow for removal of the red dot or perhaps even 1080p uncompressed.

Mike, I'd be interested to see if the HDMI output on the 7D is compatible with the Nanoflash. I hear it's not but that means it's the NanoFlash side that is the issue.
