D90 hands down. Basically its a toned down version of the D300. Your D80 is a toned down version of a D200. It would be silly to upgrade from a D80 to a D200, not even sure it counts as an upgrade as i think they have the same sensor. Don't be fooled by the numbers, a D90 will outperform a D200, except in the case of weather sealing and ergonomics. cheers,

But d200 can upgreat to d300 or d700 also

d90 may be last vision

Yes, I think the D90 will be out of production soon, but it is a far better camera (performance wise) than the D200. The conversion of the Nexus housing from a D200 to a D300 is expensive. If you eventually want to go to the D300, I suggest you do it now. It may be less expensive than replacing the D200 and the upgrade. The D90 will be a smaller and lighter rig with near D300 performance.

Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya choices.

I am curious as to why you think that the D90 will be out or production soon. I have a D90 and if money were not an issue I would love to have a back up camera body. What have anyone heard about this? I REALLY like this camera.

October 2008 to Feb 2010 (PMA) ~ 17 months. I am guessing that Nikon will stop production of the D90 soon. That and 6 bits will buy you a cup of coffee at Ronny Macs. I have no offical conformation and I am not an industry expert. Just my sense (or senselessness).

PS I have lost money in the market just like everyone else. :island:

Una mas. I am not suggesting that you run out and by another D90, but I do suggest that you keep an eye out for price reduction or some "special" deal that may imply Nikon has stopped producing a model.

Probably the best way to think about what Nikon likely will provide in 2010 is to consider what is likely to be available to customers at the end of the year. In terms of interchangeable lens models, my new and best guess at Nikon's end of the year looks like this:

Top Level (pro, prosumer) FX

12-24mp

US$3000+ D700s

D900

D3s

D3xs

Mid Level (serious amateur, prosumer) DX

12-18mp

US$800-1500 D300s

D7000 (D90 replacement)

D5000

Low Level (entry consumer, family camera) MX/DX

10-14mp

US$400-800 M3000

D3000

D3500 "

Bob - Thanks for the information. I did read his site this evening and found that very interesting. Also of note...yesterday after reading your psot, I looked up the cost of a D90 camera body and right now it is $150 lower at BHPhotovideo than it was last August when I bought mine. Which really makes me start to wonder??? Hmmmm...

The D90 is technically a better camera but it's not all better. If you only use it in an underwater housing, then the D90 is the obvious choice. But other than that, the D200 has some more advanced settings that the D90 lacks, it has also much better ergonomics and more buttons (which most people prefer, less fiddling in menues). The D200 also has better (more correct) colors in its jpgs. The D90/D300 and I think also the D3 and D700 has problems with its jpegs. Especially with the color red that is over saturated etc.

So, for a land based camere there are many pros / semi-pros that consider the D200 to be better than the D90.

Hmm I think the D200 has more focus points too, not sure though... I love tons of focus points (my D300 has 51, I just wish they were all cross points...)!

Yes, noise level is lower on the D90, but it's not that much. It's nothing like a D700/D3 (D3s ;-)).

I would anyhow recommend you to go for the D90 as it has a much better display and can do video.

But, on the other hand, I think you can get two second hand D200 for the price of a D90. And if it's something I really miss having (I have currently a D300), it's an extra camera housing when travelling. Either you get two D-SLR housings or you have to buy a complete extra compact system (which will not be cheap and will always be less good).

Hmm why do you even consider upgrading to a D200? If you want a more professional camera body, the D90 wont give you that. If you want a camera that takes better pictures, the D90 will hardly give you that either. If you want a better display, live view and video features, then go for the D90.
