aboshoff 1 Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) Hi Kenya had a very productive fishing year and I't is thought that this may be due to the effect of Somalian Piracy in the area , as fevr foreign fishing vessles brave this coastal region. Blessing in disguise or perhaps a icrease in water temp issue ? Edited February 2, 2010 by aboshoff
Drew 0 Posted February 3, 2010 I'd read that the sport fishing has seen a boon. Seeing how so many illegal fishing boats go about cleaning out the East African coast of fish due to lack of coast guard enforcement from many of those coastal countries. I was speaking with someone at a think tank who wrote a paper on piracy in Somalia, and he figured the fishing is worth over $100-300 million off the Somali coast. Apparently the lack of foreign fishing boats has mean a bigger catch for Somali fishermen, which has lowered prices in local markets and thus more locals can afford fish meat. In fact, some of the pirates claim to be vigilante coast guards since their 'government' can't do anything about the 700 foreign vessels plundering their coast annually. Of course hitting boats like cruise liners etc are against maritime law, but defending one's own fish rights is something I think they are entitled to, but I doubt that is the majority of the piracy happening in Somalia now unfortunately.
