Drew 0 Posted February 2, 2010 Canon has announced the adoption of a new MPEG-2 Full 1920x1080 HD 4:2:2 file based capture codec for their new camcorder which is now under development. The new codec works with most major NLE systems including Adobe, Apple, Grass Valley and Avid. For more info, here is the PDF of Canon's announcement. Pro_video_tech_release_v1_0_tcm13_712025.pdf Seems a bit of hype building for Canon to release codec information before camera specs but I'm guessing they will be bringing 4:2:2 recording to a camcorder similar in size to a XL-1Hs. Steve Douglas 16 Posted February 2, 2010 Sounds wonderful, of course I wish there were a photo mock up and hope it won't take forever before a housing is made for it. Whatever it is. Steve
Mike L 0 Posted February 3, 2010 Hopefully its a bit smaller than the XL1 HS. Just add a Nanoflash and you jave 4:2:2. Im waiting for someone to design a small housing for just the nanoflash with the HD SDI connection...that will be a nice improvement to all cameras with HD SDi or HDMI out. jonny shaw 16 Posted February 3, 2010 That's allot more interesting than the other Canon announcement a couple of weeks back. I reckon it will still have 1/3 " chips and it will be interesting to see how big / how much / and how good the images that come out of it are. But it could be an awesome cam. Drew 0 Posted February 3, 2010 I'm not sure if the Nano is necessary once you get to 50mbps. Going to 100 or 200mbps, the improvement is incrementally diminishing and important for the higher end film out types who want smaller cameras. It is likely to be a XH form factor than a XL form factor, which I stated earlier and mentioned here

It will be very interesting to eventually compare its output with the 5D2/7D...unless these are also updated in the meanwhile.
shawnh 0 Posted March 31, 2010 I agree. Now that I have the Nano, I have little reason to invest in incremental upgrades. Sensor improvements and FPS (60 or 120) are what would encourage me to jump. -shawn

We can but hope 240 would be awesome. Dive safe Dean(sticking with the Sony)B
Steve Douglas 16 Posted April 9, 2010 Still a fairly costly cam and now figure in a new housing and ports....we'll be pushing 18k Steve
HDVdiver 16 Posted April 9, 2010 "Image Sensor: (x3) 1/3-inch CMOS" This is disappointing (...as far as a low light capability and DOF goes). Maybe this isn't the rumoured model that was supposed to be coming out with interchangeable lenses and an APS-C sized sensor. For a interesting, speculative discussion of why that probably won't happen anytime soon have a look at: http://www.dvinfo.net/features/canon-revea...-cam.html#aps-c
jonny shaw 16 Posted April 10, 2010 It would have been a killer cam with 1/2" chips, 1/3" it will be interesting to see how sensitive the chips are, but regarding approval from networks I feel that it will fall short which is a bugger.
