kkgodiving 1 Posted February 13, 2010 It's Chinese New Year festive and I will not have shark fin soup. For our traditional family reunion dinner this evening, I have requested to change the shark fin soup to other soup. I have stopped eating shark fin soup for about 2 years now. I hope my one small step will encourage more to do the same - divers and non-divers.
AMW 0 Posted February 13, 2010 It is VERY encouraging to hear this, kkgodiving!!!! Last year I was diving with several avid divers from Kuala Lumpur who were fascinated by marine life, including sharks. When I asked them if they ate shark fin soup they all answered "YES", and when I asked them if they would continue doing so even though shark populations are plummeting, they still didn't seemed very concerned. Thus I am VERY happy to hear that you are taking a stand...someone has to say NO!!! YOU MADE MY DAY! Thank you!

Thanks for the post, it's nice to be personally proactive, but more importantly ... going public with this post helps get the word out. Thanks so much. xariatay 1 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Yes, divers should get the words out! On the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year, I was asking my soon-to-be married younger cousin if she would be serving shark fin soup at her wedding banquet. She replied "should be, since it is on the menu". I was feeling very disappointed & told her not to invite my hubby & myself because we made it very clear to all that we would not attend banquets that serve shark fin. Then I was very encouraged when my auntie (another cousin's mother) chipped in to persuade her not to serve shark fin soup because shark finning is very cruel! My cousin is an occasional diver & my 60+ yr-old auntie is a Buddhist & guess who is more shark friendly?? I noticed anti shark-finning messages in some of the free reading materials that I got from a Buddhist temple. (btw, for the record, I am a free-thinker) Hope to see the dive training agencies add the shark conservation message into their OW course materials!
