Ikelite DS 125/160 as studio strobe

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am a land based Adventure/Travel photographer who also shoots underwater.

As I am expanding my lighting I suddenly had a great idea... or is it?

To expand into commercial photography on location I need to buy extra strobes... was thinking about the lightweight Nikon SB-900 until it dawned on me that I already have an Ikelite 125 strobe. As I need a second underwater strobe anyway I thought of using 2 ikelites on land with a slave unit. It has a ringflash and even a modeling light and a built in battery... Great on location

Does anyone have experience with using UW strobes on land???

I can imagine that you do not want to burn the modeling light too long without cooling, but the strobe does not get warm by using the flash repeatedly.... I already hooked it up with an extended Nikon TTL cord and it works fine on manual.

If this works I have a nice set of studio and underwater lights and only need to customize a mount for them. underwater

looking forward to your experiments/experience

Greetings,

Frits

You should check with Ikelite. I believe if you fire the strobes too much out of water they can overheat. This heat is normally dissipated by being in the ocean. I take a test shot before going into the water, but not repeated shots.
