Mike L 0 Posted March 15, 2010 Is there any specific information you would like to know?
derway 2 Posted March 15, 2010 There are lots of discussions here about the g11. Too bad the search function is so pathetically broken it says there has never been a mention of the g11 in this forum. This is so aggravating it nearly kills the entire value of these forums.
marktol 0 Posted March 15, 2010 Try searching for 'Canon G11'. The reason you get no results is that the forum software wont work with searches below a certain number of charicters. 3 is not enough. Think the minimum is usually 4 but could be wrong on that. I have a G11 but am yet to get it wet... what info are you after? Mark
jeremypayne 0 Posted March 15, 2010 Use google to search the forums ... Here's how you use google: G11 site:wetpixel.com/forums http://www.google.com/search?q=G11+site%3A...lient=firefox-a Also, keep in mind that the G11 isn't that much different from the G10 and only slightly different than the G9. Much of what is said about the G10 and the G9 apply to the G11 as well. Biggest thing with the G9 is it had a 35mm wide end and not a 28mm wide end - which is significant. The G10 and G11 have the same lens that has the 28mm wide end.
crawdad 0 Posted March 15, 2010 (edited) I would say the "best" compact is the FIX90 and Canon S90 combo. The one short coming will be battery life. On long photo opportunity rich missions, using a lot of flash, you may need to swap batteries between dives. I am getting 170 to 240 shots using mostly flash in tests. The G11 should easily do another 100 under similar conditions. Other than that, the S90 is "best", sorry. Smaller, faster, more lens mount options and a little less money. JMO. Searching for 'canon g11' just ignores the 'g11', and gives you all the 'canon' results... Sigh.
photovan 0 Posted March 16, 2010 ...I have a G11 but am yet to get it wet... what info are you after? Mark Is there anyone that has the G11/OEM Housing/fantasea big eye or fisheye fix combo? and has got it wet? I've been asked the question about this combo for someone going whaleswimming in Tonga this season. Given the nature of the whaleswim activity... in and out of the water a lot... just wondering if there are any comments on the security of this housing/wet lens combination when used near the surface. Also, I have seen troubles in the past where people have had the wet chambers in between housing and lens haven't flooded completely in time to get the shot. We've tried flooding the chamber in a bucket prior to getting in the water, but the water usually leaks out before the photographer gets in the sea. The lady wishing to buy the setup is after an entry level housing at this time as she's not expecting to do much UW photography beyond her Whaleswim trip. Any advice appreciated! ajay 12 Posted March 16, 2010 I did a few dives in December in S Africa with the G11 in the OEM housing. The trip report and photos were linked a while ago, here it is again: G11 UW photos from S Africa If you are not buying in a rush, wait till mid-April, I'll be diving in Philippines with, I suspect, lots of macro photos.. Cheers, Ajay.

MATT S 8 Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks for sharing your pics Marc. How do you find the attachment and handling of the big eye? Hey mate I have a big eye lens that I used with my G10 but don't need it anymore since I have upgraded to an SLR. I don't think that it would be much good using on the surface unless you kept it held under the water the whole time. I did get some good shots with the big eye but I struggled to get shots that had no sun flare in the corners. I live on the gold coast and would be happy for you to try the lens if you want. marcw 8 Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks for sharing your pics Marc. How do you find the attachment and handling of the big eye? The attachment held, but was a little unstable. My first few dives picts where messed up due to the air bubble caught between the lens and case and sometimes when I first get in the water the lens was miss aligned. So I had to remember to burp the bubble and align and then it was good for the dive. I made a litle note using a ptouch "burp/align" so i would remember to the next dive. The lens did have some lens flare but this was manageable.
marktol 0 Posted March 20, 2010 Marcw - Did you find you got much of a benefit from the BigEye? I have one for my G11 that im yet to get in the water but am wondering if its worth the hassle...? Your thoughts would be appreciated, Cheers, Mark
marcw 8 Posted March 21, 2010 I did not see a downside in taking normal pictures. The lens lets me get closer to the subject which will get better colors. Some pictures were ruined from lens flare / air bubble in lens / or miss alighnment, but things happen in all pictures and these 3 issues can be fixed, the air buble in lens and miss alighnment are easliy fixed if i remember. Compared to my past pictures i saw a big improvement. The quirk that i did not like was the reason i got the g series. I like the option to go from normal photos to marcro. Removing the lens underwater and not having a proper storage made macro hard to do. i do recomend it. for $200, it is a good price.
marktol 0 Posted March 21, 2010 Thanks Marcw, I will look forward to giving it a go when I get to Egypt in June. As you say the biggest annoyance is how to store it mid dive for taking macro photo's. Im hoping with a bit of playing round I can put a cable tie somewhee along one of my strobe arms to hook it onto or something....! Cheers, Mark
marcw 8 Posted March 21, 2010 I talked to fantasea and they said the eyegripper(big eye holder) is comming out but not in time for my last trip so i created something. It was easy to exchange on land, but never tried underwater. I needed a good photo to start playing with the bungies and alignment to make the lens change and i did not see the opportunity. if needed, i can send u pictures of the holder. MitHere 3 Posted March 22, 2010 (edited) I've owned the G11 for a few months and I think it's a great camera. As far as I can say, the only things that bug me are the lack of bulb mode and I'd like a few more numbers above F8. I ordered the OEM housing today and will have it tomorrow. As far as I can tell - Unfortunately the OEM housing cuts the viewing angle of the lens down to about 60 degrees and doesn't have a warranty. Apart from that, there's nothing that I can see that warrants buying the FIX Am taking it to Fiji with the OEM housing, an Inon S2000 and the grip/arms, can let you know how that goes soon? Basically the G11 rocks Edited March 22, 2010 by MitHere
