ce4jesus 1 Posted March 29, 2010 I'm thinking our Caribbean Destination this year will be Puerta Plata on the North side of the Dominican Republic. Has anyone been to this area? If not, where is the best place to dive/stay on the island. Anyone know how you can arrange to see the Sperm Whales? Thanks, Gary

loftus 42 Posted March 29, 2010 For info on Dominican Republic diving, contact Jose Alejandro (elbuzo) on this forum. He can tell you everything you need to know about DR diving. In DR you can do Humpback action, the trips to Silverbanks leave out of Puerto Plata, but it's getting a little late in the season.
elbuzo 8 Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) Yes Dominican Republic is not the place for sperm whales . Regarding your question about diving in DR , best all around place for diving is Bayahibe on the south east corner . We have some other places that i like it more but the lack of development and facilities make the diving more dificult to access for tourists . Near Puerto Plata you can dive in Sosua but diving is only average in some spots ( use to be much better long time ago ) . The best diving in the north coats is at Las Galeras on the eastern tip of the Samana Peninsula but is far from Pto. Plata for a day trip ( about 3 hrs. driving each way ) so if it's possible for you to split your stay , i can give you more information . Let me know JA Edited March 29, 2010 by elbuzo
