Jay-11 0 Posted April 4, 2010 Hey All, I'm looking at upgrading my system Fuji S2-Pro with a Subal housing, what would be a good price for these two together? I have been doing this for a while since Nikonos V days and feel it's time to upgrade my system and the above has served me well and is still in great shape. Was looking at possibly going to the Nikon 300 or 300s system with a Subal housing. That way I can continue to use my current ports, lenses and strobes. Does the 300 or 300s use TTL? I still like to shoot using the TTL, guess that's from my V days! Thanks
Viz'art 24 Posted April 5, 2010 Jay, the Fuji S2 Pro was the only Digital camera (that I know off) that really did TTL by doing a film protocol mimic, all other had to change the TTL language and protocol due to preflash issue, so in a way, yes the D300/D300s does TTL, but nowaday it requires a TTL converter (translator) to get the message across and for this you will need digitally compatible strobes (in other words new strobes, cause your SB one O fiver are way too old for the new toys) or you can go with optical fiber triggering, you will need compatible strobes, so in other words, given that I suspect you have SB 105, if you want optical TTL then again its a pair of new strobes to add on the shopping list, or you can simply try your hand at shooting manual, at least in the beginning until you are ready for a pair of new strobes and a TTL converter. I shoot the D300s and have both a pair of TTL strobes with a converter and a pair of optically triggered strobe, I do have to admit liking the optical connections for their simplicity, ease of maintenance and how compact the strobe package can be compared to classic set up. Jay-11 0 Posted April 5, 2010 Thanks, Viz'art for the info. I currently use Inon Z-220 strobes, would the convertor still be needed?
TimG 62 Posted April 5, 2010 (edited) Yeah, I'm with Viz'art. I use a Subal housing for my D300 and have been TTLing for about 9 months with the Heinrichs Weikamp (HW). I'm delighted with the results patricularly for macro use. The HW needs specific strobes which it can control - mine are type 4 Inon 240s. Check out the HW website for more info. Aqua Foto in Germany also make a TTL converter which uses the HW technology. A very nice piece of equipment. I've yet to sort out a cabling issue with Aqua Foto..... Viz'art 24 Posted April 5, 2010 Yes Jay, the D300s has no exception, it will require a TTL converter to operate any (compatible) strobes in TTL, as far as I can tell your Inon should work with the Sea & Sea external TTL converter or you can get an internal TTL converter installed from you housing supplier like Tim did. some of the dealer on the side bar here on Wetpixel can and will do the installation of the converter if you want them to. The Subal does not allow for Optical fiber connection (no room for internal flash to pop up) and in any case i'm not sure the Z-220 are S-TTL compatible, (if someone can confirm, please do) if that is the case, then a TTL converter is the only route to TTL. Mike L 0 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) Jean, you are correct. According to the Inon website, the Z-240 and D2000 were the first Inon strobes to incorporate the S-TTL functionality....so TTL would only be available through a hard wired connection with a TTL converter such as the Sea and Sea YS Converter N Edited April 6, 2010 by Mike L
