Hi Cody, My father was a Marine in WWII and I've been to Japan and dived in Okinawa in the Keramas Islands so I guess I'll answer your post RUN, DO NOT WALK to your nearest bookstore and buy a copy of a book by Martin Edge "The Underwater Photographer, 4th Edition". You may see the 3rd edition of his book, but the 4th edition is the one you want to buy. Read it and absorb all you can and then you'll be off to a great start, i.e. you'll have a good idea of what you need to get started and you'll probably be in much better shape than a lot of folks starting out in underwater photography. Of course, feel free to visit here and ask all of the questions that come to mind. We're here to help! Kind regards, Ellen Edited to add: I researched your camera on www.digideep.com and found that there currently is no housing available for the Nikon Coolpix P100. MikeVeitch 0 Posted August 3, 2010 have a look at some of the links here for the sponsors. They sell packages of cameras and underwater housings for them. You can start out with a good compact camera such as a Canon S90 and the Canon housing for it at a very inexpensive price and be on your way with a great little set up. My name is Angelika and I would like to start playing with underwater photography and photography in general. Ellen, I just placed an online order for the book you recommended I cant wait to get it! I do have the new Rebel T2i and Ive started to look for an underwater housing for it. Im petite in size and would prefer a small housing for my camera. Im looking to spend up to $2500-3000 for the housing, but preferably less. The only housing I did hold in my hands was Hugyfot and I quite liked it. However, I would like to now if anybody could recommend something else worth checking that would be also of good quality. Is it possible to buy a used Hugyfot from a reliable source? where should I look? I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you Angelika

Hello Cody, I, too, strongly recommend Martin Edge's 4th Edition of "The Underwater Photographer". You can order it on Amazon.Com. As far as a camera spend some time researching here on this forum and check out what is available at your base exchange. You'll save some money that can be spent on other items of underwater photography. You will definitely want a camera that will allow you to use an external flash/strobe unit. Using the flash unit that is on a camera will light up all the small particles (called backscatter) between the lens and whatever you are photographing. Makes for a very frustrating and messy photograph. By the way, how much longer will you be in Japan and is the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station in your future? Good luck and welcome to Wetpixel!
