What the heck trapped this little fishy?

Recommended Posts

Saw this in the water column on a night dive in Komodo at about 30-40 ft. Looks like the little fishy got trapped, but by what? Trapping thingy wasn't squishy like a jelly, but more rigid, not exactly 100% solid. Fish itself was about a cm. and still kinda moving. Any ideas what the heck it is?

Thanks!

Phil

It's probably not trapped. That's a pyrosome - a colonial pelagic tunicate - and it feeds on plankton. Many fish take advantage of jellies for shelter & food. See Dave Wrobel's Jellies Zone - http://jellieszone.com/pyrosoma.htm
