shambala 0 Posted September 11, 2010 Looking to buy a Canon Rebel T2i (I believe this is best for the price at this time). Trying to plan out the best solution for it. I have used Ikelite in the past but would like to consider the aquatica and sea&sea or Inon strobes. Only concern is possibly giving up on TTL and relying on optical fiber instead. Going shortly to Sulawesi and hope to not feel that my results there will be a waste. I'd greatly appreciate any advice from anyone who feels that they are getting great macro results. Thank you, David
jlyle 8 Posted September 11, 2010 For macro in Sulawesi, you will be using the smallest aperture on your camera for maximum depth of field. Nearly all of the macro subjects will be slow moving or stationary. Under those conditions, manual strobe adjustment works very well. Set the strobes to maximum power and dial down as needed. Just my two-cents.
Bent C 18 Posted September 12, 2010 Both ways probably work well. Personally I use ttl for macro as I find it easier to adjust the ttl output up and down diretly on the housing than on the strobes. Shooting wide angle I use manual, as I more often than not want to have the strobes dialled differently. Then again the weight penalty when travelling with the big Ikelite strobes, and the expensive and not very reliant strobe cables used in connection with them, probably would make me change to optical coupling of strobes if I was to buy a new set up to day. /Bent C

Thank you, David Why do you think you will give up TTL if you go optical fiber. Optical fiber in the Aquatica or Nauticam housings with Inon or S&S strobes will give you optical TTL (or some approximation of it). Much better solution than going the electrical sync mode where you need external converters to do the job. Bill
tomc 2 Posted September 13, 2010 If you are going to purchase new strobes...fiber optic connection with Inon strobe set on STTL is hard to beat. My wife has the canon rebel T2i with Inon strobes connected with fiber optic cables - works like a charm.

My wife has the canon rebel T2i with Inon strobes connected with fiber optic cables - works like a charm. I've got the T2i in a Nauticam housing with dual S&S YS-110A strobes with optical connections. Shooting macro with STTL has worked GREAT so far. Haven't tried much WA/FE with this rig yet, but my past experience would indicate I will be shooting a lot more manual mode when I shoot WA/FE.
