Flip Video Camera of Nikon D300s in ewa marine housing for snorkelling

Hi,

 

I am going to Borneo in October and part of that will include snorkelling on apparently what is a fantastic shallow reef. I have been advised to take an underwater camera or housing and the only housing which I can afford is an ewa marine housing, which apparently is fine for snorkelling.

 

My question is, would a flip video camera get better results than a D300s (which also shoots video) in an Ewa-marine housing?

My best guess is the flip video would produce satisfactory results. I wouldn't trust my camera to an EWA bag.

Just get a GO Pro instead. Quality is less but comes with a snorkel housing that does well and works well enough for internet uploads.

Well, one benefit of the Flip is that you can see what you are shooting. I think it would be a great little rig for very shallow reefs, or for small-critter scenes lit by a wide light.

 

I really like GoPro, but you have to remember that the stock housing won't focus underwater. You have to get an Eye of Mine flat-port housing.

I would definitely go with the Flip. Here is a sample video I shot with the previous model in the Ikelite housing. Its perfect for snorkeling, good quality, and you can see what you are shooting. Plus the camera itself is great to use around about on your trip.
