JohnJohnsonIII 0 Posted November 25, 2003 Was freediving on the west coast of Oahu yesterday and saw at first what I thought to be a lizardfish couple. I dropped down and took a shot from a safe distance(didn't wanna spook the couple). Thought it was interesting...one looked like an orangemouth and the other wasn't a closer examination showed me what I missed. A large aweoweo was hanging out of the first one's mouth. I got in for some closer action. A little level adjustment and voila...hammer away!

JohnJohnsonIII 0 Posted November 25, 2003 And the final shot... BTW, this is all done with an Oly 5050 with in-camera macro shooting in RAW mode. Used PS XL to do some light adjustments and auto-level corrections...
Cybergoldfish 1 Posted November 25, 2003 Great sequence JJ. I think the last one will earn you some credits especially, I can almost feel your anxiety - "Don't move... Please don't move... Haaa!"
JohnJohnsonIII 0 Posted November 25, 2003 I thought that when I first realized what it had in its mouth. I remembered jimbo's similar shot and got really excited. So I dropped down and got close. I got a couple distance shots and then started working on the "how close can I get without it fleeing". I was very fortunate to get the frame filled. Once, the lizard fish couple spooked, but settled down soon. And it let me get as close as I could want. It was an amazing day out there...

JohnJohnsonIII 0 Posted November 25, 2003 Thanks Jimbo! ilanbt--you have a link to your photo? Sorry to not mention you back there. I just remember jimbo's because of the striking colors and I also believe he took a cover with that photo(congrats!). I'm still rather thrilled to get a shot at the same scene. I have often taken shots of eels at night while they are out hunting and only have mediocre shots of "the kill". Undulated moray eels kick up a LOT of sand when they strike and there isn't much time to get a nice clean shot. The lizard fish, on the other hand, gave me plenty of time. I have to admit it was a bit unnerving to see the prey gulping for air the whole time. Almost all the way inside and the mouth is still opening and closing... --John

JohnJohnsonIII 0 Posted November 26, 2003 Ahh--that shot...very nice indeed. Not sure when you took the shot, but I had remembered seeing jimbo's posted a month or so ago. That's why I mentioned his. But your's is quite sweet. The fish in mouth is a nice color! --John
