EU citizens, your urgent action is needed to help sharks!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

There is actually a written declaration in circulation with the EU Commission at present, which:

“Calls on the Commission to deliver a proposal to prohibit the removal of shark fins on-board vessels by the second anniversary of the Community Plan of Action for Sharks (February 2011).”

If the Written Declaration is signed by a majority of the MEPs, it is endorsed by the Plenary and forwarded to the institutions named in the text (the EU Commission in our case) together with the names of the signatories.

Currently the Declaration has 329 signatories, and needs another 40 by 20 December in order to be endorsed. Project AWARE is maintaining a list of MEP signatories, and also has email templates to send to your MEPs urging them to sign. Please take the few minutes it takes to do so.

EU fishing vessels account for one in three shark fins in the trade, and this is a real chance to stop them.

After you have written to your MEP, please take a few minutes to write the EC Fisheries dept. For more information, please read here:

Estonia is still missing two signatures...

E-mailed both of them - now getting my friends and family to send some e-mails.

Only in Malta and Slovenia have all the MEP's signed the declaration. We still have a long way to go.

Let's see who places third with 100% :)

There are a lot of us EU fellows here on WP!

Come one then - You are all more than welcome to join.

I'm not sure if members do care. We've had under 200 views of this thread, but 2000 for a camera or housing. I do find this very strange.

I think that the low response on this tread is also that it's regarding european citizens and i hope that the 200 views where from them and that the reacted.I also posted it on both of my facebook pages and i invite everybody from europe to do so as well as it will help to spread the word.

I'm very sorry to tell you that I've been watching this thread very close, but I'm from South America :) and a few counts came from me.

We can blame the big corporations that they are destroying the environment, but at the end of the day we need to recognize that the group of people that do care are only a few.

We are just the exception of the rule.

I just wrote in the wall of some friends in facebook about this campaign, they have friends and relatives in Spain and Germany, the two countries with less votes.

I also wrote in the wall of Shaaark!, a cartoon about sharks in facebook.

I'm not part of the EU, but maybe I can make enough noise to get more MEP signatures.

We still have 7 days so this is no time to give up.

Hi all,

Below is a reply from one of the UK MEP's I contacted: (Nigel Farrage)

Dear Mr Hanlon

Thank you for your message urging Nigel to a sign written declaration on shark finning.

Nigel is totally opposed to this practice, especially as he is himself a sea-angler and is deeply interested in fisheries and the health of the seas, generally. It is a terrible waste and indeed one that is banned in the UK - and Nigel and UKIP thoroughly support this ban.

However the practice is allowed by the EU, in much the same way as the EU's discards-policy, in general, is an integral part of its Common Fisheries Policy.

Because the EU controls UK fishing policy - and due to the EU's quota-system - fishermen have to throw back hundreds of thousands of tonnes of dead fish back into the sea, every year. There is only a certain amount of catch fishermen can land and anything more than that is penalised. So this forces fishermen to throw back into the sea perfectly good fish, in order to avoid being fined by the EU.

Naturally, UKIP opposes the EU's system of "quota and discards", in general, as well as shark-finning, in particular, and will vote, in the psEUdo-parliament, against any measures, which maintain them.

We are, of course, opposed to the dangerously anti-democratic EU, as a whole, because its unaccountable, authoritarian structure inevitably results in bad legislation, which, once adopted, is virtually impossible to repeal.

Nevertheless, if legislation, banning shark-finning, comes before us (NB only the EU-Commission can propose EU-legislation) we shall vote for it.

The Written Declaration you mention is merely an expression of opinion, which has no legislative effect.

Yours sincerely,

Jamie Illingworth

Office of Nigel Farage, Brussels

www.ukip.org, www.ukipmeps.org

To which I replied:

Dear Mr Farrage,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my email. I note that you are opposed to the EU fisheries policy, as well as the EU in general.

In this instance though I feel that your failure to add your signature to this Written Declaration is in sharp contrast to your stated interest in the health of the seas. The quote that "Nero fiddled while Rome burned" may be apposite in this case. We have already decimated over 90% of the worlds sharks, and EU vessels account for 1 in 3 of all shark fins in the international trade. If we don't stop removing the apex predator from the oceans at the rate we are currently, there will be no EU fisheries to worry about.

I challenge you therefore to show your commitment as a deep sea angler and someone who is interested in the oceans, to put your ideological concerns about the EU to one side and show your support against shark finning practically by adding your signature of support to the Written Declaration.

Once again, many thanks for you time and consideration.

Yours

Adam Hanlon

I received one more reply to the 30 or so that I have sent, also from a UKIP MEP (Paul Nuttall)and with a similar party outlook about Europe. Unsurprisingly, he makes the same argument about European fisheries policy in general, rather than the issue now being discussed

I think it is time to open the floodgates on this issue. I challenge everyone who reads this mail to send at least one email to a MEP-there are lists of them above. They will most likely not be aware of the mail's origin, and the health of the seas is not just a European concern! Please post you replies here so that we can join in on the pressure.

One think that we need to take into account, if we send the same email every time, the emails might be stopped by an email server because the server will think that our emails are spam.

We need to change a few sentence on every email, that way the email will be unique and will not be stopped.

Possibly Andres,

Less likely if they come from different email addresses.

The crucial thing is to do something!

Project AWARE has email templates in multiple languages.

Personally written emails are much more effective and only takes a few more minutes to type. Form letters are usually seen as bulk mail and dismissed.

I agree Drew, which is why I sent a personal email. Does it count if it is from the States?

Steve

I started to send emails to all MEP in Spain, because it's easier for me to speak in spanish.

No where in my email I say if I'm from the EU or not, so I'm not lying, I'm only saying in my emails that I care about this.

My girlfriend (who allso is now engaged in this action) got a reply from Estonian MEP Ivari Padar.

The answer was short - I'll do it

There is hope...

Cheers

For all those have got replies, please keep them as evidence should the MEP "renege" or feel the pressure to change their minds. Apart from confirmed bachelors, politicians are commitmentphobes.

This declaration forces the EC to look for solutions, vs thumb twiddling waiting for something to happen. With that declaration passed and the EC public consultation, we can accelerate the process a bit more. Again it depends on those who do give a crap.

My suggestion is to give a full name and town in the EU you are from. This way they cannot ignore you as a constituent.

Another reply from David Campbell-Bannerman (email)

Thank you for your letter concerning the European Union's policies on animal rights, including shark finning.

We at the UK Independence Party (UKIP) feel very strongly that proper measures need to be in place to protect animal rights.

Thus, UKIP remains committed to animal rights. We have concerns that the EU is not the best agent for securing animal rights. EC Regulation 2006/1907 has led to the deaths of millions of animals in tests on products already known to be safe. Its policies such as the Common Fisheries Policy, have caused catastrophic ecological harm to life in the North Sea. Through its funding of farmers in Spain, the EU is causing the habitat of the Iberian Lynx, one of Europe's rarest mammals, to shrink.

In addition, the EU funds bullfighting in Spain via Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) grants to cattle farmers. The EU has also stated that it will not allow opponents of commercial whaling to vote independently at the International Whaling Commission (IWC). Instead, they must abstain if a "common position" cannot be reached. Some EU countries like Denmark, have links to whaling communities, and thus could mean the EU never gets this common position and has to abstain. This could clear the way for whaling nations such as Japan and Norway to force through a return to commercial whaling.

We have concerns that a large number of animal rights groups are funded by the EU Commission. We are concerned that this may inhibit the forthright action groups need to take to hold the EU to account.

I hope that you find this reply helpful. Thank you for your letter, and thank you for taking a stand for something you believe in. The world needs more people like you.

Yours sincerely,

To which I replied:

Dear Mr Campbell-Bannerman,

Many thanks for your reply, I appreciate how busy you are and the time you have taken to consider my email.

However I am also somewhat perplexed by it!

My invitation was simply to invite you to add your signature to Written Declaration 0071/2010 which:

“Calls on the Commission to deliver a proposal to prohibit the removal of shark fins on-board vessels by the second anniversary of the Community Plan of Action for Sharks (February 2011).”

Shark finning has already wiped out over 90% of the worlds sharks, and without these apex predators in the ecosystem, your concerns about EU fishing policy will be moot as there will be no fisheries to fish.

Whilst I understand your concerns as expressed in your mail, about the EU in general, and UKIP's apparent policy of disengagement, this is an opportunity for you to take some practical action on an issue that affects us all. Your failure to support the Declaration would suggest that you are either a supporter of the practice, or that you are not practising politics of principle, but those of political expediency.

Many thanks again for you time.

Adam Hanlon

I am in the process of trying to get some air time on the UK TV channels for this. I have a few contacts, but if anyone else has any that would be useful. UKIP's stance as above is newsworthy. The idea that they won't do anything because the policy emanated from Europe which we don't support will raise a few eyebrows in the press!

Adam

Got another one!(email)

Adam

Adam, do you know if we can get the updated list of signatures?

I can see that the lists in projectaware.org haven't changed.

We are very close to the target date so it would be nice to have the updated count.
