decosnapper 37 Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) (X posted from Digigreen - apologies for those on both lists) New thinking for the new digital age - Stock agency WENN signs deal with Plixi to commercially exploit images posted on Twitter, but no mention of due reward to the creator/photographer. Full story here...... No, I am not making this one up. Its retrospective too...... good celebrity images (oxymoron? discuss.....on separate thread....) do have significant value even in this day & age - think four or five figure sums for rights. Whoever thought this one up may well have done the maths and realised it could be a nice little earner. Currently its restricted to the celebrity-style shots, but when someone sees the business model working I will give it precisely 30 seconds of thinking time in the boardroom before the net is cast wider and images of a more general nature hosted on social sites throughout the web are harvested. This neatly explains why the right to sub-license clause in the T&Cs of many sites has a similar whiff to something I stepped in earlier today. Andy Morrison 1 Posted January 5, 2011 Well for starters, newspapers, mags, TV, etc. routinely steal images off of Facebook and other social media outlets already. But HERE is a related story that hopefully will have a happy ending for us.
Nick Hope 151 Posted January 5, 2011 (edited) So if this sort of thing bothers you, stop publising your stuff on third party sites over which you have no control and start pubishing it on your own site and go after other sites that infringe your copyright. decosnapper 37 Posted January 5, 2011 Well for starters, newspapers, mags, TV, etc. routinely steal images off of Facebook and other social media outlets already. But HERE is a related story that hopefully will have a happy ending for us. Indeed theft is rampant, except now a third party intends to license them in exchange for payment without sharing.......legalised theft? And yes, saw the Morel case......good news indeed. So if this sort of thing bothers you, stop publising your stuff on third party sites over which you have no control and start pubishing it on your own site and go after other sites that infringe your copyright. Most don't read the T&Cs and think social sites et al are just a nice way to share pictures, little knowing that someone sees $ or £ signs when it comes to someone else's creative endeavours, all with cleared rights to treat as they see fit. Sad as it is, I do read the T&Cs and that goes some way to explaining why my Facebook photo album (et al) is devoid of any content. How many out there do likewise? It feels a lonely place sometimes.....
