vkire 0 Posted January 9, 2011 Has anybody on this forum been to the Bahamas on JASA's Shear Water in January? I am considering a trip and I am curious as to what the diving conditions are usually during that part of the year. Since it would be winter, I imagine higher chance for rough seas? What about water temperature, visibility and shark sightings? Thanks! KV
gina 9 Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) We were on the Shearwater last January. We overnighted in Florida before boarding the boat - it was in the 30sF there, brrr, but luckily air temps were better out in the Bahamas. We had several great days of diving as we lucked out and had a bit of sunshine. Water temps were usually 73F with one 75 and two 68s recorded; I wore a 7mil suit but was chilly because I wasn't moving much. Vis was probably 50+ feet on most dives - it seemed decent even though it wasn't crystal-clear. There were plenty of lemons, several tigers (including Emma), and a few Caribbean reef sharks. The last two days we left the Tiger Beach area and went to look for great hammerheads but never found them. Those last two days the weather was overcast (it may have rained) and the water was a bit rougher, but nothing a Scopalamine patch couldn't deal with. All in all it was a great trip. -Gina Edited January 9, 2011 by gina

loftus 42 Posted February 17, 2011 Hi KV, Dec - Feb can be a little rough and cold as Gina alluded to, but it is the best time for the Great Hammerhead quest. If your main interest is Tiger Beach and Dolphins, then the warmer months are better.
