Remote slave trigger batch!

I have built a remote slave sensor that works fine and has no problems with ambient light.

It has been tested in open water and also in the pool by myself, and a couple off other divers and Alex M.

It works fine with Sea&Sea, Inon and Subtronic.

It is very compact,

possible to choose with or without preflash,

powers itself with the ready flash signal from the flash,

has 2 red leds visible for control settings and if its working.

 

It will be in black anodized ALU with Nikonos 5 connection.

Size: almost double of a Nikonos 5 bulkhead.

 

I have no pictures yet from the PRO version.

I'll post a full review on DiveMartrix later this week. Some things to think about for the next batch:

 

* They're round. They're so round. Probably because they're machined. But because they're round, they roll all over the place. I never knew my office desk wasn't level until I got these! On a boat, rolly stuff is no good. Things get lost, fall into cracks, etc. Put an edge on your next batch.

 

* The Cover is domed - the cover has a rounded dome. There literally is no flat edge to set these things on while you gear up. Did I mention they roll around all over the place?

 

* It took awhile to set them up to work perfectly - there are only two settings... so no biggie. Its weird - my SB600 won't trigger it (better, won't trigger it to sync with the shutter) but the onboard strobe will. I need to go look at my SB600 manual and see what I'm doing wrong. In the housing, they're perfect.

 

 

I've been using these all over the place on land. I love them. I have a ton of sync cables and a couple of extra strobes - so this is perfect. UW they're a joy. A few more dives and I'll have the settings for the remotes dialed in (who knows what the effect is with 1/2 v 1/8??)

 

They got here in a week (Los Angeles) and Hedwig has been very responsive with my emails.

 

I couldn't be more pleased.

Mine arrived to the UK about 3 days after ordering.

 

Very nice, have only had a play with it in the living room, but seems to be a reliable trigger, even during broad daylight.

 

I'm looking forward to trying this underwater (Anilao, less than 3 weeks to go )

I totally understand re: changing specifications. A lot of my gear is small lot, custom manufactured specialty stuff, and this type of gear I cherish. They're always niche stuff filling a special need, are inevitably a labour of love by the 'manufacturer/designer' and generally don't have long production lives.

 

The key with this stuff is recognizing the value and application, and not hesitating to jump on it when you see it - as if you blink they're gone! So glad I grabbed two.

 

Thanks again for this - I've been using them every night (and day) above water - can't wait to get them into the pool tomorrow then into the Ocean next weekend.

The TriggerFish. This thing is small. Its milled from Aluminum. Its negative, and its bulletproof.

 

 

 

Here's a size scale - DIN plug v TriggerFish. Yes its really that small.

 

 

 

Early mounting option. Pipe clamp replaces velcro on the ULCS Focus Light Mount.

 

 

 

I eventually moved to gently clamping the knurled part of the N5 directly. It works great, eliminates another part. A T-Fish with a milled 1" ball end would be heaven, and the ultimate design improvement!

 

 

 

The Triple clamp allows me to add an articulating arm. A lot of what I'll be doing with this will involve not being able to simply set the T-Fish on the sand. I'll need to have it peeking around a corner, etc. This should work out very well.

 

 

These fold down small enough to toss into a lobster bag. I'm gonna need a caddy soon....

 

 

 

 

Here's the finished rig. Completely self contained wet / dry remote strobe rig. I'll get both of these in the pool this weekend, and in the water mid-week.

nice setup. I was diving last weekend with two units and i had problems to aim them correctly.

Looking at your photos my problem is solved

Maybe you could make a quick release system between the trigger and the arms for extended use.

Got the triggers into the pool last night.... LOVE THEM

 

A few thoughts:

 

* I still need to get used to the brilliant light sensitivity of the D7000... All of my 'head settings' have to be re-adjusted.

 

* Its still weird having to dial down the strobe power. *sigh* Love that feature on the L&M D200 housing

 

* I need to weight these rigs. No way these will work in Salt Water. In the pool, on the steps, they were tippy with just normal diving surge. In the buoyant salt water, with current and real surge? No way the Gorilla Pod and DS-125's are negative enough. Taking these to the Oil Rigs where the bottom is over 600 feet down will just get me into trouble. I need to weight these for sure

 

* This is going to be fun! The Ground FX will take a featureless dive over the sand and turn it into pretty cool fun. Especially if the sand is that undulating stuff... can't wait to add gels and other fun stuff.

 

* These trigger great when outside the pool on the deck. I love that. I've wanted to do some pool stuff (I've never shot in a pool before last night) and I can't wait to get back. Sure, the water is stupid... clean, still, warm, etc. But its gonna be fun trying some new stuff.

 

* I've already build out better ways to fasten the strobes to a diver. We built a band system last night when we got out that will make everything more secure. We dive with scooters - so stuff has to stay put at speed.

 

* My buddy and I are amazing communicators. 800 dives together over the last 5+ years. We think alike in all normal dive circumstances. We had to develop some new signs last night, as this is new. She's excellent in the water, but there is a precision we need for this to achieve the halos and the diffused light I really want with these remotes. The learning process will take a bit, and the journey is going to be a blast - but this does require an entirely new vocabulary.

 

 

I am SO looking forward to the new artistic capabilities this will bring. Thanks so much, Hedwig. I think I'm gonna grab a couple more.

All mid-rez JPGs, no WB. These were just quick test shots of my first pool session, and my first remote strobe shots. There is amazing artistic potential here. Can't wait! This pool is lit by Skylights. The light was changing so fast on us as it was getting darker and darker. I finally found the light switch and turned on the room lights after a bit. It was silly how much things changed with the ambient light fading.

Back-mounted strobe, in addition to backward-firing strobe. There will be some neat visuals achieved using the GFX downward firing strobe over the slope of the pool. I didn't really leverage that last night - but getting a really cool symmetrical fade and different shapes will be fun to work on.

Buddy rigged up. Strobe on her back, firing down between her legs for the GFX vibe I wanted. After awhile of firing the stationary strobe backward at the wall, I moved it a little deeper and turned it 180 to work on some Halo stuff. Still working on those... they're fun! The margin of error is much tighter, but the rewards, when i get it together, are gonna be fantastic.

Is this compatible with Fiber optic sync?

 

Is there a way to allow this to trigger a radio slave instead of a strobe. Would be great to be able to fire multiple strobes above water while synced with my underwater strobes.

Speaking of ways to keep the Tfish in place

 

Here's what I was using this weekend. A Clamps. The first dive, I was using bolt snaps and double enders. It came together with the A Clamps. I was able to clamp onto kelp, drape it over the corners of the wreck and keep the Tfish in range.

 

Worked great!
