Domestic Flight in Australia

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I need to find a good flight between Sydney and Cairns later this year. Who do you recommend for domestic flights in Australia?

I'll try to avoid companies like RyanAir (for those of you who knows them) for good reasons.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

I fly that route 2- 3 times a month using QANTAS.

You can often get return tickets for $290.00 including 23Kg of baggage with more weight available for online purchase.

Are you carrying around a lot of gear? If yes, Virgin Blue is a good carrier as they have a policy for those with scuba gear (sports equipment > http://www.virginblue.com.au/Personal/Flig...gage/index.htm) where they allow 5kg extra to pack whatever you like.

Not too expensive, you need to look out for sales that occur between the carriers. Avoid JetStar & Tiger Airways - they are the RyanAir equivalent here and we try to avoid them like the plague.

Also try webjet.com.au for comparison across a number of carriers to make planning a little easier.

Tiger are similar to RyanAir but JetStar are no way near as bad but still are a no frills airline.

Virgin and Qantas are the main operators and reasonable rates if you take the off peak flights.

If traveling from overseas it is most likely (but not always) cheaper to book the internals with your international flights but if booking once here, it is 98% of the time cheapest to book the flights online yourself.

If you are flying in from internationally if you use an airline that operates within Australia you can often get a free internal flight on top of your international one?

granted been a few years since I went .. is this not the case anymore? I always used to love using Quatas personally

I flew Jetstar to Tassie. They were OK (and we were travelling with drysuits as part of our dive gear). Wore my ankle weights under my jeans!

Thanks for the replies.

My family booked the flights to Australia, and I have to fix the flight to Cairns on my own. Our travel company didn't cooperate with any operators in australia exept from the one we'll go with...

Have full DSLR kit with me, but I think I'll rent some of the dive gear since all my gear is for cold water diving.

Will check everything out when I get home from work today...

Virgin Blue would be my first choice if booking with no incentives. Too easy to do on line

However if you have any points on a oneworld alliance airline, its worth looking into using them for domestic flights on Qantas, there are often very good deals
