jonny shaw 16 Posted March 23, 2011 (edited) http://vimeo.com/21389883 Looks like it will have HDMI out but not HDSDI, looks like a small great camera though and 1920x1080 50/60p thats is pretty cool. Edited March 23, 2011 by jonny shaw
Steve Douglas 16 Posted March 23, 2011 Beautiful stuff, of course, underwater shooters will have to wait a year to see if a housing is made for it and by then, a new model will be introduced. Steve

Nick Hope 151 Posted March 24, 2011 Apparently there are no integrated ND filters, so I'd like to see flippable ND filter(s) in any housing design.

hughmoore 0 Posted March 24, 2011 So true, really wish it had HDSDI would be a bloody fantastic camera then, especially underwater due to it's size and ease for travel. HDSDI is not something I personally deal with being a hobbyist, but given it records to Cards that can be popped into your computer reader, what is the adavantage of HDSDI in the camera? Thanks Hugh
SimonSpear 65 Posted March 24, 2011 Apparently there are no integrated ND filters, so I'd like to see flippable ND filter(s) in any housing design. Depends on its Aperture range really Nick. With the 7D I've never needed a ND filter as I can take it all the way up to and beyond F20 when needed. Could be the same for all these new hybrid cameras. SimonSpear 65 Posted March 24, 2011 This sure looks like a cool camera. Pricewise though isn't it about what the Scarlet fixed lens will be? Hmmm not sure if they are really comparable. Then again this camera is 100% going to be released while Scarlet......... haha well let's wait and see. I've had the money saved up for my new camera for ages now, but like Steve said unless a housing manufacturer comes out from day one and says they are going to support a new camera then you can be hanging on for ages before you know for sure. Look at the 50mbps in camera capture Canon XF300/5. As far as I know no one has announced a housing for those yet and they must have been released, what over a year ago now? What about the Panasonic AF-101? Even the Sony F3 hasn't had a housing announced yet - has it? If I absolutely had to buy a camera today for underwater use I'd still be forking out for an EX1. Lots of new cameras but no housings..... Cheers, Simon

Could be the same for all these new hybrid cameras. Well the other issue to consider is diffraction and the loss of resolution. With the 7D, the resolution is so low that it doesn't matter as much but if you wanted to keep the f stop at say f5.6 for whatever reason, ND filters are very useful. Lots of new cameras but no housings..... I don't think you'll see anyone daring to jump in on the these low mid range camcorders because of the iminent arrival of Scarlet. If you find a camera that works for you, you can always do a custom housing. Many housing manufacturers do custom housings. I think most smaller production houses will have to look at 2 yrs amortization vs 5 yrs.
Nick Hope 151 Posted March 25, 2011 Plus flip red and flip diopter... that's a lot of flippin If there was only room for 1 or 2 then it would be good to have a modular design whereby you fit whichever filter(s) into the flip arms that you want to use for that dive. I think flip diopters are probably less relevant with an interchangeable lens camera like this than fixed lens cameras. I think I'd only be interested if it was a proper achromatic Century-quality diopter. Depends on its Aperture range really Nick. With the 7D I've never needed a ND filter as I can take it all the way up to and beyond F20 when needed. Could be the same for all these new hybrid cameras. Well, what Drew said really. I've often used an ND filter when I didn't need to, to try and get a wider iris and shallower depth of field. e.g. blurring the background behind a well-camouflaged critter. Doesn't really work with something like a Z1 which wants to give you a long DOF anyway, but you can do it a bit. I would definitely miss being able to do that on a camera that is good at it. Getting that shallow DOF "cinematic" look is half the point isn't it?
jonny shaw 16 Posted March 25, 2011 Yep you are right Nick about the interchangeable lens thing and diopters, totally forgot.
SimonSpear 65 Posted March 25, 2011 Yep agree on the diopters too. You'd only really want to use acromatic, probably lens screw in ones anyway, but with a wide variety of different lenses any flip arms are going to be very difficult to implement, even for red filters. About the ND filter, hmmm well I could see it only being used in very shallow water and how many times do you need a shallow DoF in 5m? I've found using a HDSLR that more than ever when using it underwater you have to make some compromises so if you know you'll need to use a ND filter then screw one onto the lens before the dive, if not then you'll have to adapt with the controls you have available (this is assuming of course that you have the aperture range that a HDSLR enjoys). This is all assuming that someone will actually make a housing for the camera!! Cheers, Simon
