Sony NEX-5 Nauticam - Macro and E1855 Port

Can anyone confirm if a Sony LA-EA1 alpha-mount to e-mount adapter plus Sony 30mm alpha macro lens will fit behind the Nauticam E1855 port?

Can anyone confirm if a Sony LA-EA1 alpha-mount to e-mount adapter plus Sony 30mm alpha macro lens will fit behind the Nauticam E1855 port?

 

It will not fit. The lens is just a bit too girthy for the port. We do actually make a special port that will work with this lens.

 

Some notes about this lens combo.... first, to get it to autofocus, you need to upgrade the firmware on both the camera and the lens adapter. Upgrading the firmware on the lens adapter is not hard, it just needs to be done while attached to the camera.

 

Once the upgrade is done, it will autofocus, but very slowly. To use this lens, you will definitely need a hefty focus light. Once focused, the lens is sharp. For my own tastes, I found it pretty unusable because of the slow focus. Personally, I'd wait until Sony or a third party releases a true e-mount macro lens. In the meantime, for macro I'd shoot the 18-55 with a wet closeup lens. Just my $0.02.

Thanks Chris - have you any idea when an e-mount macro might be due? I've been using the 18-55 with a Subsee +10 but would like to get a bit more magnification and find that if I stack +5 Inon dioptres the CA is unfixable.

Hey Chris, just a spot of my own curiosity.

 

Why is it this lens focuses so slowly relative to the standard NEX lenses, as its a 2.8 and has a built in focusing motor? Do you lose light with the adapter? Haven't read much about the system, but thought one of the biggest strengths of these new mirrorless systems was to adapt existing high quality glass when you want it. That's what i'm hoping for with nikon at least. I'm sure this is probably answered online somewhere but it really surprises me.

That is a good question - truthfully, I have no clue. Sony had said previously "Spring 2011" for some of the e lenses, so hopeful it will be soon. I think Sony releasing the e-mount video cameras is good news for e lenses. There are signs that 3rd party lenses are imminent too... if you have an extra $3.5K burning a hole in your pocket the Zeiss 50mm macro e-mount is supposed to be out in June.

Also a good question.... seems it could be faster. Though, my reading about this lens suggest it is on the budget end despite being a 2.8, so maybe we are expecting too much of it. And speculating a bit maybe - but this being a DSLR lens it was designed for phase detection focusing so maybe there is some reason it doesn't perform as well with contrast detection. Maybe someone else with more info on this can chime in here too... I'd be interested to know if it is possible that Sony could improve this with a future firmware update.

This probably won't be available until the lens is released, but hopeful the new Zeiss 50mm macro will fit in the same port 72. I just bought the swing mount for the port 72 (pricey at $300) and hope you use it for the new 50mm Zeiss macro when it comes.
