Nikon D100 and the Ikelight ousing

Ok, neophyte question I am sure.....

 

I have the Nikon D100 and the new Ikelight housing. The housing and camera work splendidly......above water.

 

I took the unit to our local, well lit, dive pool for testing purposes, sans strobe. There is ample light under water, in fact the light meter showed perfect exposure in Manual mode on the D100.

 

The problem is, the shutter would not trip under water. Above water, no problem. Once under water, it would focus, seem to have the correct exposure, but no joy on the shutter release. Tried shutter priority, aperture priority, full manual, nada.

Try changing to your focus mode - front of camera, lower left - to "C" (or "M") instead of "S." It may be that, if you are in the "S" mode, you don't have a focus lock in the pool. Shutter won't release in the "S" mode unless it is "locked on."

Are you using a wide angle lens and a dome port?

 

If you don't have the right port, the camera won't be able to focus.

 

As Don says, your camera will be able to take a photo in C mode, without the image being in focus...but that's not very good.

 

So let us know what lens and port you are using.

Dome port with fixed focal length wide angle SIGMA lens. I will give the focus switch a try. Thanks for the quick response ! I shall report back once I get to the pool again.

Yes, that lens will require a diopter to be used in the Ikelite dome port. Consult Ikelite (www.ikelite.com) for details.

Will my 24mm macro, which can focus to under a foot also require the diopter attachment?

Lenses that can focus closer than about 10" will work behind Ike's dome w/o a diopter.

 

Any lens will work behind a flat port, however, lenses wider than about 28 degrees give best results behind a dome.
