ranger 0 Posted December 25, 2003 I was asked yesterday by my mom what I wanted for Christmas, and I replied "I don't know." She suggested a tandem kayak for my wife and I, and I said "OKAY!" Has anyone used the said name product or can recommend another one. I only say this one because of the storage space, but I do have a garage that can be rigged up with a pulley system to store it in the rafters. What would be the pros/cons of this over a used Zodiac, besides the obvious used/abused part? Any help would be appreciated! Barry
Scuba_kiwi 0 Posted December 25, 2003 I have a Diveyak it's great fun! I must admit I haven't used it as much as I would have liked to have, the main thing that puts me off using it is wind (weather that is, not a flatulence problem <_< ) but read about my experiences with it HERE
ranger 0 Posted December 27, 2003 Kiwi, How did it paddle with all of the gear and you in the back? It seems that we will have a very similar setup as my wife is a good 40 - 50 pounds lighter than me. I found a shop that rents them here in San Diego. I want to try one out before I okay it. How large was the anchor? I looked at one today that was "designed" for a kayak but not for the conditions here. Have you had it out in any bad weather, swells, or 2-3 foot waves? I really am thinking this is the kayak after looking at the rigid hull versions. The tandems don't have the room for all of the gear unless you leave one of the passengers out which defeats the purpose of a tandem! Thanks for sharing the article with me. Scuba_kiwi 0 Posted December 27, 2003 It Paddles easily with a load, but here's the hot tip ... Keep looking behind you, as soon as you turn your back on them the girl at the back stops paddling! The Anchor we got was a 5Kg one I think, it folds up to protect the inflatable, I'll have to take a picture and add it to my story ... a project for this week We haven't had it out in rough weather yet, as I said I get a bit put off taking it out in wind, and wind = bad weather, although we did take it out in rougher weather once once for a paddle but not a dive and had great fun surfing it in the 2 foot waves I'd say seeing as you can Hire one do it! that's the ideal way to go! Scuba_kiwi 0 Posted December 27, 2003 Well I had half an hour to kill while I was waiting for the pizza (my turn to cook ) so I grabbed the Anchor, it weighs 2.5kgs (5 pounds?) and I have added the photos to my story so go and have another look to see what it looks like
davephdv 0 Posted December 29, 2003 I've owned a number of dive kayaks. Currently have an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT. A very nice dive kayak. I've been looking at the Sevylor line of inflatables as a second kayak for transportability. The rigid boats will perform better in the water and especially if there is high wind. I've been looking at the new Sevylor because you can add a motor to it yet it can still be paddled by one person.
davephdv 0 Posted December 29, 2003 They also have a new inflatable for kicking with. HerbKo, would this be legal for the Monterey Beach Photo contest?
davephdv 0 Posted December 29, 2003 And their new sit on top. These last two products are fairly inexpensive.
ranger 0 Posted December 29, 2003 I've been looking at the new Sevylor because you can add a motor to it yet it can still be paddled by one person. I like the model you are talking about but it doesn't accomadate 2 divers and gear. I thought long and hard about it but I don't want my wife kicking that hard to keep up. It might make the ride home either really quite or really loud (neither being good ) I am going to try the DiveYak in a couple of weekends. I have to work this weekend coming up. Work just keeps getting in the way of my diving!
davephdv 0 Posted December 30, 2003 The two person diveyak (which I can no longer find on their website though a local diveshop has one) looks to me to be rather small for two people and their dive gear. When seen in person. The new diveyak (the one I included the picture of) looks to have more bouncy and room in it. When seen in person. Their website does show pictures of it with a motor and two people in it. (Though not with dive gear.) I remember from my Zodiac days that you have to count a diver and his gear as two people. Why not get the new one and tow her behind? If she starts to wank you can just cut the tow rope. Seriously, when you get one let us know how well it works. I'm interested in knowing.
