Alex_Mustard 0 Posted May 11, 2011 I am still in Iceland, but enjoyed the fact that I was able to get a press story out to the papers back home about the classic dive in Silfra (and some of the other much less dived freshwater canyons) that are fractures in the rift between the N.American and Eurasian plates. Been in several of our national papers. Best was double page in Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/picture/20...itness-pictures Although Daily Mail - is better online: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...nic-plates.html As always with these things - best not to read the words too closely. Such as this one in the Mirror (that is Gisli in the photo, not me as I took it!): http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2...15875-23121684/ And Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegal...11.html?image=2 But fun to see my photos have made it home before me. Alex p.s. Of technical interest, perhaps, the first two images in the Mail link are taken with the Nikon 16-36mm rectilinear lens on FX, rather than a fisheye - I have been using that lens increasingly more of the time as I am so pleased with how it is performing behind the Zen 230 dome. anthp 0 Posted May 12, 2011 Huge congratulations Alex - great spread! We got it downunder too. See here: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/galle...6-1226054260597
echeng 0 Posted May 12, 2011 Love 'em, Alex! Congrats on the multiple spreads and great imagery! I love working with your Brit press agents. Having underwater photos sent out to the mainstream feels different.
Alex_Mustard 0 Posted May 12, 2011 That's cool, Anthony. Iceland is a bit of a trek from Melbourne, though. I agree, Eric. I think that the press agency route is an important output for underwater photographers now. I was actually quite late to the party on this one - and I have no idea how long this phenomenon will continue. Plus it is always a bit of a gamble, as financial returns depend on how much momentum the story generates. This one is doing really well on that front so far, but the last one I did at the start of the year on the Kittiwake generated little more wonga than a standard dive magazine article (even though it did get me on Irish TV). And the text is often not the high-brow message you were after! This is the first time I have had one appear while I have still been on the trip, which is cool. And I have to admit that it is very fortunate that it is a British thing - as I do like the fact that my friends all see the pictures when they are reading the papers! Plus Solent's office is just down the road in Southampton - so I can knock on the door if they don't pay! Alex
Giles 1 Posted May 12, 2011 Alex, Thats interesting .. CNN was reporting videos they hosted of the Kittiwake to be the most watched video online, it was quite big in the news world from what I gathered. I think I saw your piece on one of the top shared lists for the Iceland story too. Been paying attention to that since a Lionfish story from Cayman did the same thing. yahsemtough 0 Posted May 12, 2011 Awesome Alex! I second the bit about having to ignore the text that usually goes with the stories. Most likely not our first choices. Cheers Todd
Elainew 1 Posted May 12, 2011 Great stuff! Caught it in a couple of papers. Glad you survived Iceland's 2 degrees. Makes our 5 at St Abbs the other week positively balmy.
Rocha 0 Posted May 12, 2011 Fantastic images as usual Alex! The photos were also picked up and featured by the top Brazilian news channel (Globo): http://g1.globo.com/ciencia-e-saude/notici...a-islandia.html
DeanB 19 Posted May 12, 2011 As my dear old Ma said, with a wry smile, while reading the 'Mirror' news paper "He must be talented to actually take that picture and be in it" Nice one Alex however you still haven't reached the pinnacle unless you get into the top tabloid 'The Sport' Dive safe DeanB
tdpriest 115 Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) Although Daily Mail - is better online:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...nic-plates.html Alex Even my wife, Alison, noticed! Congratulations!! I'm impressed that the texture and colours of the rock come through in the pictures; very nice. Tim PS: Two places at the same time? I didn't know that you had access to a Tardis - the Doctor, indeed! Edited May 13, 2011 by tdpriest

decosnapper 34 Posted May 15, 2011 Nice one Alex however you still haven't reached the pinnacle unless you get into the top tabloid 'The Sport' I would give that a wide berth.....not on the grounds of taste, but I think they went bust a while back....... DeanB 19 Posted May 15, 2011 I think they went bust a while back....... That's a shame it was the only decent tabloid that told the whole truth and nothing but the truth... Dive safe DeanB
Scubysnaps 9 Posted May 16, 2011 Well done Alex, shame they called you a scuba diver, not an underwater photographer!
Alex_Mustard 0 Posted May 16, 2011 Thanks all. These press stories are an adventure in themselves. It has been fun watching it go around the world on internet, newspapers end on TV, and generate a handful of big money sales along the way. Alex p.s. I'd happily accept it if that was the worst mistake they'd make. These press stories always get the detail wrong.
Damo 4 Posted May 16, 2011 Hoy Alex, I think a well deserved apres dive in the Blue Lagoon is in the offing now.
