DuncanS 0 Posted May 17, 2011 The governor of South Sinai, Egypt has made a decree to allow fishing in the National Park of Ras Mohammed. He will also allow fishing during the spawning season. There is a lot of information on CDWS facebook page and HEPCA. Please take a minute to lend your support by signing the petition and hopefully we can reverse this descion before the National Park is destroyed! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-fish...-national-park/ Many Thanks in advance Duncan

john70490 3 Posted May 18, 2011 I signed the petition half an hour ago, checked back just now to see how it was going but was unable to access it. Have the Egyptians blocked it? If so, it's a pity as I have posted the link on a Swedish divers' forum with almost 23 000 members.

If so, it's a pity as I have posted the link on a Swedish divers' forum with almost 23 000 members. I can still see it and I am in Egypt. The site is not hosted in Egypt so they couldn't take it down. The only thing they could do is stop people in Egypt accessing it. Up to 1513 now. Thanks for sharing on the Swedish divers forum! DuncanS 0 Posted May 19, 2011 Thanks to all who took the time to sign this.... Latest news just in: CDWS would like to congratulate Amr Ali from HEPCA on his contribution to last night’s programme ‘Our Country’ on Egyptian television. The programme featured a significant piece on the current situation in Ras Mohammed including a phone interview with Mr Ali and a response by phone from the Governor of South Sinai. This morning CDWS chairman Hesham Gabr received a phone call from the press informing him that the decree to allow fishing in Ras Mohammed National Park has been cancelled. At this time, we are still waiting for official confirmation. Even when we receive official confirmation of the cancellation of the annulment of the decree, the diving community needs to maintain pressure on the authorities until all fishing boats have left the waters of the national park. In the event that fishing boats are still present on Saturday 21 May, CDWS will join SEDO and Sharm residents in planning a demonstration outside the offices of the City Council. Confirmation of the date and time of any demonstration will be made on Saturday afternoon and will be posted on this page and sent to members by email. Woo hoo!!! Thanks again for all your support!!! shawnh 0 Posted May 19, 2011 So sorry I am late to this event. Can someone explain why on earth he would decree fishing suddenly in a National Park? For a country the so depends on tourism, this is insane. I can imagine in some third world nation...but real in this location? - Shawn

tdpriest 115 Posted May 20, 2011 A dive guide I met earlier in the year was proud that his friends had "shot the looties" during the protests. Obviously, the looties are now in charge... Tim
stewsmith 14 Posted May 20, 2011 Signed mate. As I always say " Only in Egypt " It will probably be a case that the Guv of Sinai lets the fishing boats out to fish once the sun goes down. See you in a few weeks Stew

DuncanS 0 Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) I dive with Ocean College in Sharm, and there website says the decision has now been reversed, so no fishing. Can anyone in the area confirm this? Hiya, I did post earlier up the thread that the decision has now been reversed, however that does not seem to be the end of it. The fisherman were promised a pay out to stop them fishing there. They went up to El Tur to collect the money and when they arrived they were told there was no money, so that night they headed out en mass into Ras Mohammed. We were moored at The Alternatives and saw them streaming past. When we jumped on The Kingston we saw 3 boats trailing lines along the reef. Not good.....
